    HI guys,

What sort of KMS are these 2012 diesel engines (d4d?) good for with a good service history? When does the big cost come in and from what? Thank you

Its a game of chance with any d4d engine.. Too many of them popping pistons weekly now.

its the old " how long. is a piece of string" scenario - even with Toyota dealer servicing , some crack pistons at very low mileages ( under 100k ) yet others go to 400k no worries. There have even been 2014 models cracking pistons so i dont know if any of the 5 changes in thier piston design have actually worked!! The one i had waited till 130k , out of warranty and towing a boat in the middle of nowhere .... tow home was $1600ish alone....

That's definitely not good news for someone looking to upgrade from a 1kz to a 1kd D4D.

I'm guessing it's caused by overheating.

Having gone from a KZ to a KD I’m not sure it’s actually an upgrade.
If you spend some $$ on your KZ it will go pretty well, as good as a stock KD or better.
Once you look into running costs, the KZ wins by a mile. New injectors about 5x cheaper than a KD for a start.
Only really poor item on a KZ is the factory head. Once that’s been changed to an AMC and if the cooling system is good, she’ll go for years.
