  • Unusual engine noise 1000-1500RPM

Over the past month my engine has developed a strange noise between 1000-1500RPM. The noise is only present when the engine is hot.

Below is a link to a recording of the noise.

Could it be that it's not the engine but some other thing resonating - like a failed spotweld of a panel?
Can you feel a vibration with the noise?

I was thinking that but having trouble tracking down the source of the noise

Unfortunately not... really loud yesterday after a long drive up north, first thing this morning it was gone and came back when the engine heated up.

For anyone coming across this with a similar problem. Turned out the noise is the Provent 200 Relief Valve fluttering. Solution is to stretch the Relief Valve spring a bit or get an upgraded heavy duty spring from Western Filters.

Does the engine appear to have more blow by pressure now? That may have caused the valve to be "relieving"?

It's a new engine (long motor), cracked piston It has used almost no oil in 10km, and no visible blow by. Best of all the oil was still gold coloured when I did the oil change (EGR blank and catch-can).

Seems this is a common problem and there is a stronger spring available which I have ordered.
