  • Any thoughts on a DP Chip for Prado 2011 GXL 160k?

    Hi Team,

Im looking at purchasing a DP ChipX https://www.dpchip.com/ to give the Prado a bit snap, I have seen plenty of positive feedback online, but I thought it would be worthwhile asking actual Prado owners.

The Prado I'm looking to add this into is factory ex-fleet car with 160k on the clock and no other modifications.

My understanding is it will assist in making the car a bit more snappy and some added fuel economy.

Has anyone used this chip long term? Have any thoughts?

Should be good for snap at some stage for sure, if you mean cracked piston. Each to their own.

      Not entirely helpful
      Lawesb given the question.

That model will still have the old style pistons, so chip is a big no-no. I was running a Steinbauer and cracked a piston at 170k.

My feeling is a chip is not the greatest idea in most cases. Are remap is a far more thorough way to gain a few hp. A chip is more like a sensor bender.
Ive seen chipped d4ds with 3-400000 on the clock and still going strong, while stock units dropping pistons at 200k.
I think owning a 3L d4d will always come with a certain amount of risk. Chipping it slightly increases that risk.

Towing and extended heavy work, particularly with a chip/tune, will crack the pistons as it exceeds the mechanical capacity of the piston, it's straight mechanics. Toyota recognised the flawed design when they redesigned the pistons.

I don’t disagree with that at all. Hence my hesitation with chips.
I have also seen 3 stock, well serviced prados die at around 200k while two mates which are chipped and flogged go into the 300k.
My personal work Hilux was driven hard and overloaded, never had a problem in 275k. Not even the injectors. Same thing on the other hilux we had.
Go figure how that makes sense.
I’ve always been a believer that more power comes with a shorter life span so I’ve never chipped my cars. Possibly I’d consider a remap. What I am confused with is the seemingly random way the d4d motor seems to detonate!!!!
Two other stock prados I know spend a fair bit of time towing and both are nearing 300 with no dramas at all.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, I think I will NOT chip, Im not tearing around the city so at the risk of cracking a piston I will avoid, THANK YOU

Agree that it is a bit random. I had a mate who fully flogged his Prado including towing and did 300k without a problem. Mine blew up at 170k, but I did have a chip. The long motor I put in has different pistons but I'm unclear on what the difference is

                  Hello All

i had one of those DP Thingies, to be honest I didn’t notices any real improvement, my advice is if you can afford a DP Chile Module you can afford a proper tune for around the same price, of course those tunes come in 1 2 or 3, stages I took number 1 because I didn’t requires hardware upgrades, no 1 tune what a difference it made to the performance get up and go more in the bush and sand trust me when you try stage 1 tune you will certainly No the difference compared to one of those medicine man snake oil CHIPS , p,ease don’t wast your money on theses bloody things.

years ago maybe but since there are Good Diesel shops that provides very tunes these days you’ll certainly notice the difference and won’t be disappointed

peace be with you my friend

G'day OP, I have had DP Chips on two of my 120 series and one on my 100 series Sahara and never had a problem. You can certainly feel the difference with one unless perhaps you had it on a low setting otherwise something is clearly not right. I also went a custom dyne tune on my old NP Pajero and that made an amazing difference also. I also get my car checked by Berrima Diesel who owns DP Chip and they are always honest and helpful from my experience plus I like dealing with local Australian businesses which Berrima Diesel has been there there for yonks. Hope this helps mate! Cheers, Ben
