    Hi, newbie here.
    I’ve just had a major issue with a prado 2012 gx diesel, auto, 300,000km, apparently an injector has failed and done a piston or vice versa causing total engine failure.
    Quote of around 18k for a new genuine Toyota engine and turbo, water pump gaskets etc all fitted at Toyota.
    It comes with a 2 year parts and labour warranty.
    Reconditioned only appears a few grand cheaper.
    It’s a beautiful car otherwise with a few nice extras. Probably worth around 30k in current market before the damage.
    My questions are
    how much would I get for it as is? 10k-15k? Less?
    how much would I get if it did have a brand new engine?
    How do I prevent this happening again? Extra fuel filters? Upgraded pistons?
    I now know I would get my injectors checked and replaced more regularly as I haven’t had them done in the 100000km I’ve had it.
    Is a recon nearly as good as new or just spend the extra?
    And being 10 years old with 300k on the clock what other expensive items will likely go in the next few years? Diff, gearbox etc?

    Dont know whether to count my losses, live life on bitumen for a while and buy a Kia, or fix it and keep it forever.

    Like to hear some opinions or people that have had a similar situation and what they’ve done.
    Also if anyone could point me in an experts direction in Perth
    Also is my damaged motor worth anything or just scrap?

    Speak to D4D engines Australia. Will be a better price, its all he does.

    Don't be fooled by some snake oil salesmen that blame the injectors.. Naturally they can offer a kit to you to replace the injectors. The pistons have a known weakness. Ask those who replaced their injectors to have a piston fail 20,000 down the road.

      Hi, I've got a similar situation. 2013 GXL with 220,000km driving on freeway towing a boat and total loss of power. Two injectors are gone and following a compression test was advised that cylinder 2 had low compression. Quote for a replacement engine is $20k at Toyota in Brisbane. Just looking at options to either replace, sell or buy something else.

      I've tried D4D engines and waiting a response. Does anyone have a good mechanic they would recommend in Brisbane to look at this to provide another view and quote?

        Hi, also looking for recommendations in Brisbane nth. Prado 120 with a newish engine replacement 120000km 5 years ago now injector problem but as yet undiagnosed properly. Towed home over 600kms !!! Engine was 12k 5 years ago

            Having been there, done that, I’d fit a second hand motor and sell it. Not worth the effort and finances you will end up sinking into it. Few other posts on here about this at the moment.

              I fitted a new long engine because I wanted to keep my Prado, it really a cost vs benefit decision
