Bad Smell on takeoff

Parked on a hill at a stop sign for some time, finally accelerated and got a strong diesel type smell in the cabin.
Local experts say it was the auto box holding the car on the hill and overheated? The smell was auto fluid?
I know I should have had it in park but it was a tricky intersection.
What do others think?

Why Park? In drive just hold it on the footbrake so the transmission is not doing the work and getting hot.

Yeh, had my foot on the brake. But others have said, should not have left it in drive.
