  • 1KTD replace or rebuild?

    Hi everyone in pradoland,

I'm sorry yet another engine failure post. I only just joined this forum after my wife rang me and said "the engine is shaking like a leaf and there's oil pissing out of the catch can everywhere". Ok so quick Google and fourbyfour confirms my worst fear that I've cracked a piston or two. With 330k apparently I've gotten off lightly. Also very lucky in that it happened just as she exited the freeway around 2 or 3ks from home. We snatched it home and now it's as good as tits on a bull.

Now I'm sorry if there's a million posts by others about this but we're up shit creek and need some advice.

Which way did people go? A brand new Toyota create motor at $12 or 13k or get the motor pulled out and rebuilt or get it pulled out and then get a reco'd motor from somewhere and swap over all your bits onto that? What was your final bill?

Any info/two bobs worth is much appreciated!

    Jono.

    I would never rebuild again.
Too many variables, chances of dodgy workmanship, cheap parts or just innocent mistakes.
If you feel the car is worth keeping, a long motor is the only way to go in my opinion. Be honest with yourself though, how old and what condition is the vehicle in. Are you comfortable spending 30-50% of the vehicles value on repairs, or is a second hand motor and moving it on for whatever you can get the better option?

Yeah ok thanks mate eh. It's a 2010 gxl with plenty of family wear and tear so it's probs gonna fetch $20-25k probs closer to $20 seeing as I haven't done anything to it besides the catch can save egr partial blank off. So I'm guessing a long motor is around $5k and then maybe $2-3k to get everything sorted? So yeah getting closer to $10k which would be 50% of it's value.

Anyone got any ideas what a second hand motor might be worth?

Thanks mate yeah I saw them. Tons of videos shit bagging the pistons. Says they replace them with different ones. I'm guessing there about $5k delivered to your door? Would I have to buy other new things like injectors to go with it or does it come with everything?

For a second hand motor, try a wrecker, google is making it look like 5k
Rebuild I’m guessing 7-8k depending on what’s done.
New long motor 10k??, a bit unsure without chatting to a dealer.
The problem is where do you stop? If you are doing a rebuild or a new motor, you’ll probably consider the following to make it better/protect it, or “while I’m there”…
            1. Injectors
            2. Fuel pump rebuild
            3. Radiator
            4. Alternator
            5. Starter motor
            6. Fan hub
            7. Clutch
            8. Heater hoses, belts
            9. New turbo
            10. Pulleys and bearings

The list gets longer the more you start to pull apart. Some things you don’t need to do, but if you’re laying out 10k on a new/rebuilt motor, you hardly want an old turbo wheel going into the pistons or the radiator leaking and cooking it.

Most of the time a well done new motor change or rebuild will be in the $15-18k range all done. With a cheaper second hand motor you wouldn’t probably find the need to change anything but the real necessities, probably costing you $2000 on top of the motor.

All the best, it’s a tough call and we will all have a lot of opinions

I'm in the same boat mate!! Looking at the D4D rebuilt long motor and a new long motor (Engine partial) from Toyota. They are quoting me part number 19000 03671 which is period correct for my 2012 VX. These pistons were suspect and apparently there was an update in Jan 2014. This long motor part number is 19000 30890, 11/2014 - 6/2015. There was another update of the piston in 2017 apparently which is the latest revision. I have the Toyota rep chasing the details of the pistons in the motor they quoted me. Just don't want to get the same shit pistons again. Doing my head in doing all this research!! Lot of money to fork out. Need to be sure we going to keep the car for 5 years or so!!! Cheers mate, all the best.

Toyota sell quite a lot of long motors, I doubt that there would be any left with the old pistons. Mine had the new piston number. I only saw something about 2017 pistons on a Russian website., never found them in real life.

This link 2017-06-30 Moteur 1KD-FTV- fissure du piston - Fichier PDF (fichier-pdf.fr) has a French copy of the Toyota EU Bulletin which discusses the new 2017 version (130 series) piston with part number 13101-30250-01/02/03.

If you go to the Aust Toyota Manual site Toyota Service Information & Repair Manuals (toyotamanuals.com.au) and select Bulletins then Advanced Search then put in Model Prado there are heaps of interesting bulletins for lots of issues being discussed on this site but one related to this topic part way through the list was labelled 1KD ENGINE PISTON CRACKING file name TTNF-0014-2020.html date of publication 25/08/2022. They have restricted access to this quoting AASRA Technician level permissions required to access content. Would be interesting for someone on here that has access to find out what this contains and if its related to the newer pistons or something else.

I was pretty pissed off that I missed out on warranty. Apparently I should have requested a report on the engine when it was removed, I argued that this made no sense as Toyota removed it, were aware of the warranty process and I wasn't. No doubt could have won if I'd gone through ACCC or small claims, but it all became too hard because by then the engine had been disposed of. Basically my claim was denied because I didn't follow their rules, which I wasn't made aware of...talk about arse about.

                      Howdy,
Thanx everyone for their responses. I'm currently sitting on my hands in regards to my GXL. Luckily we have a new car on order and one we can borrow in the meantime.
How did you go 1steven? Did you have any success? Just wondering which way you ended up going?

                              Hi Krypto,

Sorry for the delay... Ended up pulling out the motor and putting in some new pistons... Big job! But can be done if you're not in a hurry. Took about a month or so without rushing into it
