  • Engine replacement

Advice pls ladies and gents, cracked piston in my Prado diesel and engine requires a rebuild or a replacement. Quoted $20k from my regular mechanic, approximately, which seems damn high.
Any recommendations for a reliable rebuilder on the Northern beaches? also thoughts on second hand low k engines apart from the obvious ones around service history, driving stress etc?
Appreciate any help or recommendations, thx in advance

There are a heap of posts on here discussing same issue so may give you some leads.

Alternately give Peter at D4D Engines a ring as they do these all the time and he seems pretty genuine and reasonably priced. They have associated installers or ship Australia wide to your nominated installer TOYOTA 1KD-FTV 3.0L AND 1VD-FTV 4.5L TURBO DIESEL ENGINE SPECIALIST - D4D Toyota Engine Specialist (d4dengines.com.au).

Others have also been getting various levels of replacement short/long engine good will warranty support from Toyota Australia depending on age/kms/service history.

I got a long engine from Toyota installed including new turbo for around 16k. As it is a known issue with service bulletins you should be able to get them to come to the party.

You have to do the sums.
New long engine from Toyota is around $10k. You’re getting new injectors, latest version Toyota pistons and of course the Toyota warranty.
You’ll be reusing your old turbo, manifolds etc and the engines don’t come with a cam belt.
Engine in and out is a total bastard of a job, but your mechanic’s quote seems about $3-$4k too high.
          D4D engines is a drive in/out option.

Recently replaced 4 cyl 2L Hyundai Tuscon diesel (long) engine with one from a written off vehicle (65000km), total cost $3300 from a 3rd generation local mechanic, 3 month warranty. Not trying to compare a Toyota new engine to a 2nd hand swap, I'm agreeing with Carco that the mechanics quote is far too high. Not many local mechanics wanted to touch the job though, will take too long/ don't have the gear/ don't have the staff were the comments.
