  • 1GD Prado with Steinbauer, anyone have one installed ?

I have a 2022 GXL 1GD Prado, with 150kw/500nm engine, I wondered if anyone has installed a steinbauer to this configuration (which they say will give 180kw/600nm), and how do you find it ? I am considering one, just to give a bit more torque for towing the boat, and general drivability.

I appreciate there are risks to installing a power module, so I am interested in people who have installed one, and their impressions (was it worth it, would you do it again, do you notice the extra torque, etc).

    Dear Brisbane4101,

Yes I have a Steinbaurer installed on a 2021 GXL. In general it runs very well with a noticeable increase in get up a go. I did get it Dyno'd after it the orginal module was fitted and it was getting the numbers that Steinbauer were stating. Fuel consumption around town is between high 8's to 10 depending on how I drive it. EGT are around the in the 300 to low 400's. If I do push it then the EGT will climb to high 400's maybe very low 500's. I do monitor boost and EGT etc using a scan gauge so to try and not cook the motor.

This is my second Steinbaurer Chip on this vehicle as the first one had issues with the CANBUS shielding on the injector loom. It would throw fault code but the vehicle would not go into limp mode. Diesel Care in Dalby were great, they recognised the issue over the phone and sent me a replacement updated module and an updated loom free of charge and provide paid satchel so I could return the faulty unit.

This is my second 150 Prado and my second (third) Steinbaurer chip on a Prado. I had a Patrol prior to that also with a Steinbaurer Chip. I would lie if I said that were all trouble free, the module of the Patrol also developed an issue, but in all cases Diesel Care were great. With the Patrol they even opened their Toowoomba workshop on a Saturday to diagnose the issue and replace the module free of charge.

I have also done the Eco/Sport mode switch and that combine with the Steinbaurer chip is a bit scary, so I am very careful with that.

If you are going to do it then made sure that the CANBUS earthing point is good and that loom is secured and cant rub against anything. The injectors on the updated motor are complicated and sensitive with feedback to the ECU so any wiring issues could become expensive.

    Regards

hi mate, thanks for your detailed response. I am pretty happy with the performance of the Prado 150 as standard, it sounds like the steinbauer has worked ok for you (with a few caveats), I'll reconsider if I want to install one myself though, I don't want to have problems in remote touring areas, etc. Maybe slow and steady is the way to go.
