  • Improving towing performance

I have recently bought a new caravan which is 2 tonnes and the petrol engine performance is poor due to the high gearing and not so great torque low down. The previous 120 I hadcwas much better. Is there a chip available to improve towing performance

I made enquiries about a chip for the 150 petrol, and was told there are none available, and was also told the engine is very efficient and does not need chipping anyway.

Like you, I tow a 2 tonne van, and the hills can reduce speed a bit. I use the auto shifter like a manual changer, and sometimes lock in 3rd driving up the bigger hills. I don't drive in 5th or 'Drive' when towing the van, unless driving on a slight downcline where there will not be much stress on the transmission and engine.

I am looking at a different exhaust system with a straight flow muffler, which may improve performance slightly.

The only other option is a turbo or supercharger addition, rather costly though.

    Yowie.

          Hi Stowe
Maybe look at lower diff gears. There is a place in the usa that sells kits and there on Ebay. I put lower diff gears in my holden crewman and its the best thing i have done to the car. Maybe look at changing the value body in your auto to change how it shifts. Talk to a good auto guy about that or the Auto wherehouse. Also look at your exhaust and headers.
          Cheers

Mate, when I bought my camper I decided it was time to go from Petrol to diesel for torque reason and fuel economy. Hard to go the other way.
