  • V6 Exhaust systems, extractors, sound files photos and mods.

I have recently had my large factory muffler cut out and a magnaflow stainless muffler installed. I was reasonably happy but it was a little loud and farty through 2000 to 2700 rpm but nice everywhere else. I have since had two hod dogs installed, one before the muffler and one up the back before the tip. The two hotdogs made a minor difference but I'm mostly happy with it now.

I may end up fitting extractors to change the note a little but would be keen to hear from any 150 owners that have gone the extractor option

Please post up your photos, videos and experiences.

    Hey Darren,

Do you have any pics of your exhaust? Did you have any of the piping changed as well?

By the way, good quality picture on the camera you've used, is it normally fitted there?

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

Hi Geoff, I will take some photos and put them up. Essentially my big Toyota muffler was removed and a 18" magnaflow straight through was welded in its place then a stainless hotdog went on in front of the muffler and now another stainless hotdog at the rear with the new tip welded to it (all welded to factory pipe). My camera is a contour roam on a section mount I move it around when I take off road video but it spends most of its life inside my windscreen ready to film if any idiots need recording lol.

Has anyone put extractors on their 150 V6? I read mostly good things about extractors on the 120's with some even saying best mod they've done so far. I would love to hear from a 150 owner.

Ok so I've done a heap of google research and discovered MOST V6's drone somewhere in the rev range. Mine has a drone or deep hum from 2000-2700rpm which is Unfortunately where the car is mostly when accelerating in drive, fortunately not sitting on say 80kph or 100kph just accelerating. I love the deep rumble at idle and the note over 2700rpm is very nice so stumbled across a holtzhelm resonator. It is basically a piece of exhaust tube welded off the side of my catback now the trick is to get the length and diameter right to work. The way it works if sized right is it cancels out a particular sound wave (hopefully the drone sound wave) approx 100-150htz. Well after visiting my local scrap yard I managed to get my hands on a a suitable length of 2 1/4 inch stainless exhaust already bent up in a shape I could use (no charge). I spend the best part of tonight welding and came up with below picture.
Now these can be hit or miss but fortunately I picked a length of 75cm and the result was the whole system is a fraction quieter all round but the drone between 2000rpm and 2700rpm has reduced by about 70% so I'm now VERY happy with my exhaust....next I may consider some long tube extractors and new Y piece etc.

            Picture?

You've been busy tonight. Sounds like you've had a win at least.
Well have to catch up one day, so I can see - or sound :-) how it sounds

When I was looking at models, and thinking of getting the diesel, my first mod was going to change the exhaust system. Since getting the petrol, and having 200 killawasps, I hadn't really worried about it, but now you, and my brother, have got me thinking about it.

I just can't leave my cars alone unfortunately lol. I'm going to do the exhaust as hopefully in the next six months or so I can put on a TRD supercharger.

Will do mate. Next year my Prado is due for replacement but to be honest for the first time ever there's nothing I want to go to...SO a TRD may be the go. I love the new SRT8 jeep grand but its no good off road and I really just love the Prado.
                  Watch this space... Lol

                    Hey KAKADAZ,
a long time ago I know but i was wondering if you ended up putting an exhaust on your truck? Also which company did you use if you did and what did you think of it (noise, fuel economy etc)?
                    Cheers
