  • Which petrol is best, 91 or 95 RON

With the new petrol engine, what does it run best with?

91 RON or 95 RON unleaded. guess will have to consider cost, economy, etc. Has anyone tried a comparison?

Im pretty sure you'll find the motor prefers Premium (95 RON), if you put 91 in it, it will just pull the quality of the motor down, but will still run it without doing any damage. Stick with the 95, its worth the small price premium.

you will find the lower the octane rating the poorer the engine will perform, some engines will run well on 91, earlier motors, ive got a factory supercharged commodore and when i have put 91 in it once and it ran like a pig, idled rough, pinged when you gave it a bootful and generally didnt like it, i run 98 in it all the time and it runs better with the 98. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Since the day we have brought the 120 it has run on 91 with no issues, i have tried higher octane rating with no noticable difference in power or economy, currently running BP with has ethanol and i think i am actually getting better economy than when i ran shell 91??

Thanks for the replies. Someone once told me that even though the 95 is more expensive, fuel consumption is reduced with slightly more power output, so the expense is not much different. Will stick to the 95.

Re: Which petrol is best, 91 or 95 RON

            hi,
you will find that 91 RON fuel is slowly being phased out anyway. It really is a 'cheap' fuel.
The Caltex Vortex 95, for example, is not just a higher octane fuel but has also got added cleaning agents to keep your fuel injection system clean. If using 95 all the time you never need add fuel injection cleaner at all...Overall a much better fuel.
As for E-10. The octane is high but there are other issues - make sure vehicle manufacture allows use of this as it can be harmful to some components.
E-10 Is not good for anything that sits around for a long time with little use. Eg, boats.
Generally E10 uses slightly more fuel than 95 so perhaps the slightly lesser price is false economy when you need to use more to achieve same distance travelled.. though compared to 91 you may find E-10 economy slightly better but i would certainly use and injecter cleaner each service with E-10 and every 2nd service using 91. E-10, personally won't use it.
You will find that in future, diesel, bio- diesel, 95,98 E-10 and E-80.
I myself use nothing but 95
            cheers, Rod

              Thanks Rod.

Does anyone know which company supplies the fuel to Woolies service stations? What I was told is that Caltex is the supplier.

Obviously the discount fuel is cheaper, however, if I am going to buy a higher RON fuel grading, which I didn't have to for my 80 series Cruiser as it would fly along regardless of what it drank, I would prefer to buy something of good quality. Some years ago, I was told not to buy Shell fuel because of the amount of additives in it, and that was from someone in the fuel business.

Rod, one thing I noticed about your vehicle extras is that it has an insect screen for the radiator. Will it fit the 150 series? I rang Toyota spares about the screen and was told nothing has been developed yet for the 150.

This is not always the case, it doesn't always come from caltex.

Re: Which petrol is best, 91 or 95 RON

                  hi,
when woolies 1st got into the fuel business years ago they opened a few of their 'own' sites but had issues with fuel quality from imported cheap stuff. This was also before the 'cleaner fuels' senario was brought in by the govt. Once 'cleaner fuels' was brought in, the imported fuel did not meet specifications so a lot of it stopped until O/S fuel spec's came up to scratch.
To resolve quality issues and really get a foot hold in the market, woolies went into contract with Caltex (via co-branded sites) to use the Caltex name and to supply quality controled fuels.
The co-branded sites are actually controlled by woolies and they actaully set their price per maket, competition etc etc.
The non co-branded Caltex sites are still controlled by Caltex / franchise etc.
There are but 2 refineries in NSW and Caltex supplies most fuel sellers, except for Shell, through the refinery at Kurnell and then pumped under botany bay to banksmeadow for distribution via truck / pipe lines etc.

as for insect screen, i made my own using aluminium flyscreen which sits behind the grille.

                  cheers, Rod

                    Thanks again Rod.

I still have the Toyota insect screen for my 80 series Cruiser. It fits the outside of the Cruiser grill. It is slightly smaller than the grill of the Prado, but I will attach it to the inside of the grill so It does not rub the colour off the grill.

The only problem is a section underneath the number plate is exposed within the bumper. Maybe a bull bar will cure the problem of the lower section.

I've got a relative who fits out new servos, fits, replaces pumps and despensors etc etc. He says the 95 pumps and systems are always rooted due to the crap they put in the fuel. He's always told me to go 91 or 98.

                        Hi,
yes i have the std Sover. bullbar and my flysreen that sits behind the grille continues down behind the bar covering the entire radiator. . I simply cut the flyscreen to size, folded around the edges like a hem on clothes, punched 4 holes in each corner, fitted plastic hole protectors ( as fitted in tarps ) bought a little shock cord and matching hooks and simply hooked each corner of the screen onto the car where it would hook onto. I bought the shock cord, hooks to fit shock cord, blue plastic hole clips from Whitworths boating supplies. cost next to nothing for entire set up.

                        cheers, Rod

                          Sound a good idea Rod.

I removed the Prado grill and attached the Cruiser screen to the rear of it. Had to cut 2 slots in the steel mesh to slide it onto the rear over the brackets (which did not want to unbolt themselves), and attached it with numerous plastic ties. Painted a bit of rust converter onto the cuts. Took a bit of fart arsing about to do it, hopefully it will do it's job. The lower part of the radiator is still exposed in the middle of the bumper bar. The screen covers most of the upper radiator and also the auto transmission cooler.

The manual says 95RON is the go, so on the whole that's what I've been using (except when the price of e-GEN 95 is considerably cheaper, or I can't get 95 and have to go 98).

Generally, the e-GEN 95 (95RON e-10), gives me worse fuel economy, so I don't use it much. The 98RON Premium doesn't seem to make a huge difference.
