  • GAS CONVERSION ON 150 SERIES V6

I am toying with the idea of having my 150 series Prado GXL converted to gas. I have covered around 5000 kms to date and I am averaging around 15.3 l/100 on E10 fuel just steadily commuting around the suburbs. Two questions. Firstly, is this consumption about par for city cycle driving? I did see 10.9 l/100 on a recent trip up the expressway to the Central coast recently. Secondly, has anyone had their 150 series V6 converted to gas and with what results? Thanks, Jeff.

I think half your consumption issue is the E10. I believe whilst it may be a bit cheaper you don't get the same economy as regular fuel. Was your freeway run using E10.

Yes, it was using E10 for the freeway run. The local Shell servo where we always buy petrol has discontinued regular unleaded and now only stocks E10, 95 octane or 98 octane fuels. I have never used E10 in any vehicle I have owned except for this current Prado. Inside the filler cap there is a yellow sticker stating that the vehicle is suitable for E10 fuel. Perhaps I may be better served by using the 95 octane on future fills. What do you think? Jeff.

With E10 the stoichiometric ratio is 14:1 air fuel ratio, with regular unleaded its 14.7:1. The octane rating of E10 is better than regular unleaded so the ECU can adjust timing to suit which results in slightly better performance but it will also be adding 5% more fuel to achieve the correct AFR.

            Hi Jeff

My consumption varies as well, highway only at 110 km/h I get around the 11.5 l/100, drop to 95 km/h and it drops to 10.3 l/100 (too slow for me though), around town it usually shows 13.9 l/100. On a recent trip with the Pradopoint guys to Rainbow Beach, I did around town (30%), highway (40%), and beach/track driving (40%) at the refill it showed 13.7 l/100. On the Ormeau trip it showed 13.5 l/100 after highway to and from and probably 4 hours of low range and idling.

I have now done about 6500k's and have noticed that it is getting better all the time, I don't use E10 though, as in the past I have noticed a much higher consumption on other cars.

            Regards, Richo.

Any "E" fuel will have increased consumption figures.

I would suggest if you are looking for best mileage to try 98 +

I found 5% better economy on 98 than normal unleaded.

+ 1 .... theres no point with "E" fuels, people are getting jipped for thinking they are saving. stick with regular unleaded if you can or if you can afford it go for the 98.... gives the fuel system a good clean and smoother running engine.

Why not spend the money on supercharging it instead? - There are a few kits out now

I would try 95 and 98 ron through a few tank fulls each to get a good representation of each. Say two tanks using each which should be close to 2400k's on each. Then factor in the prices for each and you will get a true $ per k result.

Have you thought of signing up to fuelly.com so you can record your use? You can also put it in your signature block on the forum as well.

Not a prado but we did this with our rav4 when I was living in port macquarie and had to do weekly trips down to Canberra when our baby was born. (1600k round trip).

The best fuel economy was using 95 ron. 98 and E10 were the same - go figure

I wouldnt look at gas personally. Why stuff around with a fantastic package.

                      Prado 150 gas conversion

Prado 150 with 20K. General fuel use 11.6l/100, highway 10.2. Towing 17 ft pop top 100kph around 16. Only use 91 octane - have noticed no difference using 95. Had a 3.5V6 Rav on liquid gas injection, brilliant - it ran 12 l/100 normal use and 18 towing van - no change in performance. Tempted to do same on the 150. Liquid injection easier on valves due to cooling effect.

JG before you run off to buy a petrol and put it on gas, consider the highest running cost of all: depreciation. The diesel will cost you less to own overall as the small increase in purchase price and higher running costs of diesel vs gas will be offset by the massive difference in resale, a difference that will be exagerated by the presence of a gas system fitted to an engine everyone knows is not designed for it.

Hi Fellas. Unless you are into the greenie feel good group, check your fuel usage figures very carefully before changing fuels. Its all about how much it costs to get from A to B - not what your MPG figures are. With low octane fuel, your cost per litre is lower but the vehicle does not perform as well and won't go as far on a litre. On a 530 km trip in my wifes 2 litre RAV4, it is cheaper one way using 98 Gull fuel than the return trip using 91 octane and is nicer to drive on the high octane. Believe it or not it is still cheaper to do the trip in the Prado (KZJ95R) including road user tax. Cheers.
