  • high fuel use petrol v6 120 prado

hi ,am new to site. I have a 2003 120 4lt petrol prado. i recently took a extended trip with lots of dirt through the WA outback. was not overly loaded up but did tow a very small camp trailer at 400 kgs my fuel consumption was near 25 lts per hundred kms. since returning (without trailer or load) i continued to check and fuel use is over 20 lts per 100. have changed filters, oil, checked air sensors etc with no change. I am running cooper A/T tyres at 36 psi, run that up to 40 and got 18lts per 100, i know this is still high does any body have any suggestions, powers exellent no smoke no fuel smells but im told i should be getting 12-14 lts per 100
    thanks

Hey BULLBAR , that's just what happens when you put something on the towbar of a V6, fuel doubles.

Towing you will never see 12-14 per 100 unless its all downhill. It is possible to see 16's with a light load. I changed out all 4 of my o2 sensors and picked up a 2.5 /100 gain in economy. Clean MAF, filters etc.

Agreed. Try an 18ft hardtop caravan. It gets comical how much fuel the V6 Prado will drink when maintaining 100kmh with caravan in tow. It’s about the single only downside that comes to mind when comparing the V6 to the diesel alternative.

2005 120 series V6 Grande, 2 inch susp lift (King/EFS combo), 32 inch MT’s, Safari Snorkel, rear diff lock, breathers, Light Force spotlights, UHF, dual batteries.

From last few trips away towing a 19' tandem offroad poptop. 2004 V6 Auto.

country driving without van. between 13.49 and 17.75 l/100km

Towing varies , best ive got was 19.42 to a worst of 28.61 but that was into headwind from Esperance to Bremer and in a bit of a rush.

Tend to stick to speed limits normal driving but towing try to sit between 90 and 100.

My 120 with the usual lift, bar, roofrack etc did 18-20 around town and 25 plus towing a 2000kg van.
just the price you pay for power.
