I was driving along the beach this morning and an alarm and rattle/shutter started, but didn't last for anymore than 5 seconds. I have engaged 4wd but am unsure why this would have happened. Has this happened to anyone else or am did I do something wrong

What you experienced was the alarm and the physical "rattle" that you get if you are getting wheelspin. This is actually explained in the "Off Road Driving" section of the owner's manual. Whenever I am driving in the desert [dunes] I make sure that the central diff lock is activated and the TRC [traction control] is switched off. To do this you need to depress the TRC switch [located on the panel below the steering wheel - yes a stupid place considering all the other locations it could have been placed!] with approx. 3 seconds. The orange indicator on the speedo will now be lit up and you will have a message on the trip computer screen saying "TRC OFF".Originally posted by dreamon View PostI was driving along the beach this morning and an alarm and rattle/shutter started, but didn't last for anymore than 5 seconds. What happens in effect with the TRC in the ON position is whenever there is a hint of wheelspin [as you will expreience in sand or mud] the management system will start applying brakes to the wheels that are spinning - not what you want when momentum is the name of the game! In fact the brake lights will even light up when this happens.
I have found that once your speed exceeds around 60 km/h the TRC will automatically engage again. This is a problem as you have to continually need to disengage it by pressing the switch for 3 seconds. I have now learned that when a tricky dune or sand drift is ahead I get all the switches in the right places before arriving there but quite often get caught out when you hit a patch where you need the TRC off in a hurry!
This, incidently, is probably the only real negative that I have experienced thus far with by VX. Good luck - the fingers become very agile after some practice!2011 Prado VX 4.0 Auto - Pearl White and having fun in the sun in the Middle East.
