I do like the look of platforms, but for some unknown reason my head worries about things falling off! Maybe that's a cue for tying things down correctly!
You will need cross bars mounted to the factory rails. Or remove the factory rails altogether and mount it directly to the roof. Just buy the 3-bar HD set from Toyota and use the feet and legs from it and use them with the Rhino Pioneer Platform. It only takes 6 bolts to undo and the platform and legs comes off.

I use eyebolts along with ratchet or cambuckle straps to tie things down. It is nice and secure then.

I found an old Pajero forum (2 1/2 years old) bagging the welding quality of the steel ones, I would be really interested what they look like in the flesh nowadays, any Victorians nearby to check the store at Campbellfield??
      Thanks for these

This is more my budget too

        Thanks amts, you persuaded me!

I have made my final decision, and instead of going with uncontrolled quality assurance out of China, I'm going with the Rhino Pioneer platform 1928x1236 42102B for $769 from Sunshade Products in SA. I like the fact it is low profile and light weight. It looks good and has the flexibility of adding side walls later if I really want to go that way. Plus there are a heap of accessories like tie downs etc for added strength. And it is a trusted brand, and nearly half the price of the ARB Aluminium cage which is where my search began!

And will post some pics on my car when done!

See if you can speak to Lou and get the price down a bit. There is also a good price on the Sunseeker II 2.5m awning for $299 including a 30cm LED light strip with dimmer. Also the spiral sand pegs are $8 each.

And if you want, I can get trade price on the 3-bar HD racks from my local Toyota dealer. But otherwise, if you ask nicely, they will probably give you trade price anyway

Thanks Again, Lou is who I spoke with, will go see him at lunch. For the moment, I'm mounting on the factory rails unless convinced otherwise. See the car is technically mine but used for work (car allowance) and I need something easy to disassemble I am thinking, for when bosses and visitors are occasionally in town. Can't have it looking like too much of a beast

I have a 2.5M Kalahari Awning which is awesome and held up in some amazing Far West Coast Thunderstorms last year, so all good there thanks!

However, spiral sand pegs might be useful.

Thanks for your help amts, I might one day take you up on that 3bar HD offer.

OK, just note that the roof capacity with the factory rails is 80kg and goes up to 100kg if you remove them and mount the platform directly to the roof.

Lou actually talked me into the 100kg rating set up and I am now mounting direct to the roof, spend a few more dollars now and forget about it. I now have the platform and roof mounts to fit tonight after the little guy goes to bed!

                Will post some pics soon.

Been looking at Rhino platform for a while. Just attended Adelaide 4wd show & the Rhino sales guy says that they have now come out with a platform that bolts directly onto factory rails rather than having to get cross bars. Showed me a photo of his own 2012 prado with the new platform fitted. He said he couldn't believe why people buy the trays coz if you are worried about gear falling off then you haven't secured things properly. New platform is in the Rhino catalogue.

Sounds like the Rhino Pioneer SX Platform which has been out for a while now.

You can mount on the factory rails, but decreases load rating to 75kg I am told. Is worth spending the extra money to mount direct to the roof. It adds weight capacity to 100kg and also decreases height for people that like to go into carparks. Now its mounted, don't think I will remove the platform, although if you wanted to, its as easy as 6 screws.

The awning (which I only realised today is mounted probably a little too far to the rear, slight adjustment tonight) I mounted using the foxwing bracket, drilled an additional hole to suit my Kalahari, these are a very very strong brackets and will last a lifetime unlike the one that came with the awning! And now I have the foxwing bracket, the awning is extremely easy to adjust, remove or mount. Just loosen up the bolts a little on the top of the brackets that mount to the platform, slide the little plate out the front slot opening and then at the back and your done, a 2 minute job! When my work visitors are in town or winter time, the awning comes off and the rest of the time it is on, easy!

Good to see that they have slot openings at the rear of the planks too. Mine only has the openings at the front.

I noticed that too on my new one. Made things a bit easier.

G'day Nadgey/AMTS, this is exactly the setup I'm contemplating putting on my 120. Can either of you (or anyone else with similar setup) tell me the overall height of your car with the Rhino platform bolted straight to the roof? All of the car park limits around here are 2.1m, so it'd be great if it was less than that! I should note I have a 2" lift.......

                            Cheers

Just measured mine, almost 3" lift at rear (70mm) and to top of awning and eyebolt left on top of platform is 2085. About 2040 if eye bolts are off.
