  • GPS/iPad

I have seen threads regarding conecting GPS units to laptops, which appear to be an appealing method.
However, due to the relative size of an opened laptop within the confined cabin space, I though an iPad in this regard would be avantageous.
Maybe someone with far more IT knowledge than I, could advise if this is possible?

I was thinking maybe a 7" tablet might be a better fit and not as cumbersome and big as an ipad. How about this one - Optus ZTE for $99?

    Already has GPS built in.

There is an Android version of Oziexplorer in beta currently as well as Co-Pilot.

You can also get the "netvertible" 10" netbooks which have a screen that folds over to form a tablet. I'm about to get one of these.

Thanks for posting this Marts.. I have been thinking the same thing and this has prompted me to investigate further. I prefer the iPad to both a 7" tablet and a laptop for any number of reasons. So far I have found a whole lot of debate about GPS in iPads that has been less than helpful.
        Cheers

You can get GPS moving maps software for iPad that has only half, if that, the functionality of OziExplorerCE. VMS and Hema have gear for it plus an app called Bit Map which uses the exact same maps as OziExplorer.

This is interesting. OziExplorer for Android
I wonder if there is an iPad app in the offing?

You owuld assume that Des will be trying to enter this market as well. If he doesn't I feel he will be left behind as Apple will try and corner the market with everything they pump out. The apps currenlty available for iPad have no where near the same functionality that Ozi on a CE device currenlty has but then Des dosn't have an app out for that device and the inidtication from the Android variant is it will be a slow buildup.

Here is a link to the Ozi Dev FAQs:
              http://www.oziexplorer3.com/ozice/faq_os.html
iPhone and iPad are there for development but after Android has been released as a Beta. I believe the current very limited functionaility Android is only an Alpha at the moment.

I have an iPad which I use for GPS/Mapping. I use Ozi on my desktop & laptop and previously when travelling I used a PDA with OziCE for moving maps/routes/tracks etc.
After I bought my iPad last year I went on a trip for several months & during that trip I only used the iPad. Best buy I have made (not just for GPS etc but the multitude of other uses). You must have a 3G iPad for GPS chip & it is very accurate & hardly ever drops out.
I agree that the apps on iPad do not have the same functionality as Ozi but for what I use it is OK. I use BitMap for moving map & routes/tracks etc. I prepare the route using Google maps then transfer to BitMap. On BitMap I have the full Aussie raster topo maps as well as some others. My iPad sits easily in my 120 Prado just behind the 4Wd lever. I also use Mud Map with over 50 normal road maps etc & can moving map those as well.
For me the iPad is great as it gets used for all the navigation (including turn by turn - Metroview app) as well as internet/emails/photos/blog writing/internet radio/spreadsheets etc etc.

Have been a ozi + tablet & Garmin map 276c / map source user for a long time, both systems work great and together, sharing Routes and tracks, recently picked up the Motion X HD GPS app and it's by far the best I have seen for the iPad brought a few now and they haven't lasted a day!

Can move WPTs and GPX data to it via email up load though limited to 12 WPT at a time

Still early days only a week and country Km's

Been using a EEE pc and Navman combo for years and works well. I have an Ipad so might look more into what willykj has done as this might be ok until OziExplorer is release for the Ipad (fingers crossed).
