  • Land Cruiser Prado 150 speakers, amp and sub recommendation and placement

    Hi,
I want to upgrade my Land Cruiser Prado 150 (2010 model) factory speakers, and include an amp and sub as well.
I already upgraded my head unit to a Kenwood DDX-8036BT, now I need some help with the speakers.
I want to initially replace the rear speakers, then the front 4 (2 dash / 2 doors), and lastly include a sub/amp. I need to go bit by bit as I'm on a budget, so won't be able to upgrade all at once, but just want to make the plan

For the rear I want to put a pair of Infinity Kappa 6.5's, I think that is the size for the rear doors. At the back sound is low, no bass even treble. Should I go with a 3 way, 2 way or do components work? Also the 6.5" 16.5cm ones should be ok to replace the factory ones ?

    INFINITY KAPPA 652.9i
    or
    INFINITY KAPPA 62.9i
    or
    INFINITY KAPPA 60.9cs
    or
    Infinity Kappa 65.9cs

For the front, for the doors should I go with the 6x9 3 ways or ?
    INFINITY KAPPA 693.9i
    or
    INFINITY KAPPA 692.9I

For the dash, for now they seem ok, but any recommendations?

For the door speakers, would I need an amp, or would the existing head unit be enough, and if I do need an amp for them, what about this ?
    JBL: GTO-1004e

And finally for the sub, since it’s a SUV should I go for an active sub like this
JBL Bass Pro II - Active Bass Tube
    or
    INFINITY-BASSLINK-BLACK-PC4-20

or should I go with a sub+amp option? I'm not too sure how to select for a SUV.

    Would really appreciate your assistance.
    Thanks

I took some pictures of the speakers thought the door and it looks like the fronts are 6x9 and rear is maybe 5 1/4. Would that be right? Thanks

I believe the fronts are 16x9, not sure about the rears. Biggest change will come from changing the front speakers.

Thanks krypto will start with the fronts. 6x9 have you upgraded your fronts ? What did you put, was wondering on the depth if I pick wrong.

Also was wondering, if I put new speakers and they need an amp, will it affect the speakers on the dash, should i replace those also? What would those be?

        Thanks

I haven't changed the speakers, but may do if I change the stereo. From past experience front speakers always make a bigger difference. I not sure about spacers, and you'll have to dive in and find out. Take some pics to show us.

How are you finding the Kenwood unit and did you fit it in the top. If so where did you get the replacement side faciia panels from?

The fronts are 6x9s. I replaced them with focal kf3 3 ways and made mdf spacers. The rears are 6.5s and will also need spacers as the factory ones have a plastic shroud that attaches to the door.

I recommend focussing all the cash on the fronts as that is what gives you the sound stage. Powering with an amp is definitely worth it. As to what amp and speaker to get, that is impossible to say as there is so much out there. Best bet is to spend time on a car audio forum and go to some stores and have a listen.

Thank you so much for the details. Will start with the fronts as you mentioned.

The kenwood head unit was put on the top, and the mounts I think were made as the head unit which came with the vrhicle was stolen. Will post some pics.

Thanks again for all the help on the speakers.

                Hi Mimic,

The options are endless when it comes to upgrading the crappy standard speakers. The advice provided above by Schniff is spot on: 6x9 fronts and 6.5 rears - both will need spacers as the standard Toyota fair have built-in plastic mouldings which act as spacers. The door mouldings come off fairly easily, just be careful with the power window wires.

I fitted Soundstream SST6.5 in the rear and Soundstream SST6.9 in the front, both purchased from http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/ in the States. The price at my door was a couple of hundred less than exactly the same products from within Oz. I bought everything else locally - Pioneer Head Unit and Amp. I decided (for me at least) that a woofer wasn't the best use of the available space and in hindsight I'm very happy that I didn't bother as the Soundstream speakers are just awesome.

The most expensive part of the whole process was the damn double din facia plate that Mr Toyota doesn't like to sell in Oz.

                Have fun.

                Neale.

Hi, thanks for the responses. I finally went out and bought a speakers and amp. Tried the site you mentioned and sonicelectronics. I bought a 6x9 Infinity Kappa for the front, and a 6.5 Infinity Kappa for the rear. I got a Pioneer GM-9500F amp. I was wondering, for the dash speakers, as i can't connect them to the amp directly as they'll burn if I cold connect them to the front HU speaker outs, and the preouts front and rear to the amp directly for the door speakers. Also would I need a sub also with these speakers, or it should be enough?
                  Thanks

Hi one more question, do you know the size of the dash speakers, or what they are?
                    Thanks

It's a 4" speaker in the dash of the VX and Kakadu, but I don't think they are present in the GXL or GX.

Thanks so much for the reply. Are there any online resource for how to remove the door panels and dash? I remember finding these for my older Prado 90, but wonder if these are available for the newer ones?
                        Thanks

With the dash, start with the two silver side panels, they simply pull outwards and unclip. That will reveal screws and the rest will makes sense once you see it.

With the doors, there is a screw behind the door opener panel, and a couple more behind the handle cover. After that the rest is just clips holding on to the door. I think that's it from memory. Start unclipping from the bottom and work your way up. If you've done it before you'll have no problems.

I should add that the silver side panels can only be removed AFTER the HVAC control cluster is removed. The whole unit is clipped in and comes out simply by pulling straight out of the dash.

Thank you, will try it out.

What would be the best place to install an amp? Under the driver seat or at the rear? I was thinking of later installing a basslink sub maybe under the front passenger seat, will it fit and would it make it uncomfortable for the person sitting in that seat? option would be rear again. Where have you installed?

                              Thanks again.
