  • Problems with A/C after deep water crossing

Had a bit of a weird problem the other day. I did a water crossing in my 150, and the depth was enough that the water was over the bonnet most of the time. A few times it splashed onto the windscreen and (im guessing) soaked into the A/C vents under the wipers.

After this i had a little bit of steam through the vents and afterwards found that the A/C wasnt blowing very much air, regardless of how high the fan was turned up.

After a few hours the problem went away, so im assuming there must be some soft of paper filter in these vents which got wet, and subsequently blocked up by being wet.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this? The problem seemed to go away after a few hours, and its working fine now, so im not overly concerned, but as mentioned was curious to see if anyone else had a problem like this?

Im aware of proper techniques to create the bow wave, however this was a little hard to do given the depth

Next time, try maybe have it set to recirulate, or off altogether, and see if it does it again..

I found that when left on 'fresh' and the fan off, I can still feel a bit of air coming through the vents. So best set it to recirculate.

Did you check the in-cabin air filter to see if it is still OK?

On the 120, it's behind the glove box. Not sure about the 150 but I would have thought it would be there too.

I did the same thing and shorted out the fan (totally dead) - the air cond filter was fine though. Water ran out the footwell vents too (seats had to come out to dry out the carpet properly). Still waiting on the new fan to arrive (which is $550 by the way).

I've never been big on deep water crossings or mud holes in modern 4wds. Too many expensive electrics to replace if enough water gets in, let alone the possibility of being stranded. A different story with older vehicles, less electronics, less worries. Prados have CPU's and other electronics behind the kick plates at floor level and dont take kindly to being submerged. Some people think their 4wds are boats .... their not! If I'm going to drown a vehicle, I'd rather it be a $4,000 vehicle, not $60,000 +.
              But that's just me.

I do know where your coming from, however despite popular thought, the major electronics are mounted under the dash, much higher up the car for that very reason.

                  Hi Ryzz

The cabin filter is in behind the glovebox on the 150 as well. It only takes about 5 mins to get out, but it takes 60mins and a coupla beers to sort out the accumulated crap we have in the glove box, still a great reason to sit in the solitude of the man cave with some tunes, beers and no blah, blah, blah, nag, nag, nag....

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

PS I hope none of our new found better half PPers read this otherwise I'm deep in it.

The ECU is located directly next to your right shin.

Dont remember seeing that in there, remember seeing a lot of control modules mounted under the dash. Stand corrected if that is so.

I had this very same issue, the A/C cabin filter was drenched and blocked, as soon as i removed it the fan worked perfectly! Off to Toyota for a new filter and back on the road.

Is this filter located behind the glove box?

Yes that is the one, remove the glove box and it slides out.
