  • Fault codes running chip it

Just wanted to put it out there that the chip arrived today and I was eager to get it installed and test it out. All was fine and was incredibly impressed with the increase in power and torque, however I did get a fault code up where the engine light came on, the lo range light was flashing and what appeared to be the traction control/vsc light come on the dash. I spoke with chip it previous to ordering the chip and one was sent out with a level 5 tune.

My question is has anyone had similar experiences and if so were they related to fuel pressure maxing out, or was it due to something else. I'll tackle it tomorrow when I have more time by detuning it to level 4 and see how that effects things but I'd like to hear from other members just to hear what your experiences are.

    Cheers,

    Chris.

The only real way to know is to use a scan tool and see what code your actually getting. If it says low fuel pressure then yes you have maxed out the fuel limiter sensor and need to put int the little disk. I'm actually going to attempt this on the weekend. But if it says large fuel leak they have sent you the old type chip. Quite possible because they sent me the wrong chip three times:/

Did you have to find a power source to run your chip or did it only plug into the MAP sensor and fuel rail?

Chip uses the fuel rail sensor for power so it is the newer type chip. Thanks for your reply, I'll have another look at it after work today and plug the laptop in and detune it down one notch to see what happens. I guess a few other blokes run the scanguage for reasons like this?

      Cheers.

Righto. detuned to lvl 4 tune and voila, no more fault codes have arisen. However If anyone knows where the little metal fuel pressure override disk goes could they point me in the right direction, I'm still quite new to this common rail thing.

        Cheers.

I just looked at the thumb drive provided with the new chip and there is no instructions on how to install the fuel limiter mod. But if you look at the opposite end of the fuel rail to where you plugged the fuel sensor plug in you will see the fuel limiter valve. It's a prick to get too. You will need to remove a nearby bracket and the oil filter to change it. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow when I'm not so pissed.

shamozzle, my brother and I just finished installing the fuel limiter mod disk. It took the best part of six hours and let me tell you it was an absolute C%&T of a job!!! The instructions I sent you are actually for a hilux not a prado but are essentially the same. Except for the electrical harnesses being in the way and brake lines, which makes it even more difficult. For anyone else going to attempt this here is a list of things you will need.

              10mm spanner
30mm spanner (to crack limiter valve and re-torque)
30mm open ender cut in half (to make tightening easier)
A little telescopic mirror thing on stick. (to see what your doing because it's well hidden)
              A small bright torch
Toyota oil filter removal tool. We didn't have one and used a strap type one and ended up crushing the filter and replaced it with a new one. Only because the Toyota mechanics done it up waaayyy to tight.
              Super glue.
              A carton of Carlton Dry.
              Long nose pliers.
A good nights rest before attempting.
Another car to use if you end up losing your $hit and burning your Prado.

But on a happier note on Tune 15 there where no engine lights accompanied by a "low fuel pressure" code. Fark me I think removing the engine would have made the job easier.

I have spoken to soon After our huge effort yesterday putting in the fuel limiter disk I'm still getting a "low fuel pressure" error code accompanied by another that cant be read by my scan tool. It says it's defined by the manufacturer. I was running the vehicle on tune "10" and took of from the lights normally and then all the usual warning lights came on. I stopped to plug the scan tool in to read the before mentioned codes and also noticed the engine making an extreme rattle sound which went away immediately after I cleared the codes. I then sent the chip to the factory tune and so far no error codes. I will be calling chip-it tomorrow to see what they think is the problem this time..

                *******UPDATE*******

I just produced the exact same fault codes and engine rattle moments ago by accidentally trying to write another tune to the chip with the engine running. So it was quite possible I did the exact same thing last night after fitting the fuel limiter disk. After all I had quite a few beers under my belt and I got my sober missus to drive while I had the laptop plugged in to the chip. So I'm thinking I may have clicked "write" whilst driving:/ I remember clearly now having the chip-it software open on my laptop when this occured. So now problem with chip, just problems with the drunken idiot playing with it.

Ok so I was driving to work this morning with the cruise set on 100 kays and no laptop anywhere near the vehicle and I got the same error codes. So I spoke to Chip-It and explained to him what happened and that I have the limiter disk installed.

He basically said this; Even with the Limiter Disk installed you can get some fuel leaking back running high rail pressures. Unfortunately it's not possible to completely blank off the limiter valve. What you need to do is keep backing it off a tune level until you find one the vehicle is happy with.

So having 15 tunes doesn't necesserily mean you can always run the higher tunes. Each tune (engine map) goes up incremently in boost and rail pressure that may or may not exceed a particular vehicles fitted components. But the vehicles fail safes still manage to work and protect the vehicle from damaging itself.

So basically you have to play with it until you find its sweet spot that the vehicle is happy with and every vehicle is different depending on the sensors tolerances and pre determined manufactures parameters.
