Well I've done both my fuel filters 4 times in 11 months so I don't see the issue with that.Originally posted by Geoffury View PostDarren, so you don't feel lonely, boss just had a very similar issue with his 200 last week, from the same dealership!
Put it in for 20K service. Had called them at start of the week, told them he had a fuel filter warning light come on and also had to add 1ltr of oil on the weekend, after a low oil warning came up. They said bring it in for it's service and they would check it out.
He picked it up at the end of the day, $480. Break down from Toyota why;
Replace the fuel filter and labour $70.
Flash the computer to remove the warning lights $140.
Break test $40
Adjust hand break $20
Fixed price servicing charge for 200 series $210
He didn't have time to argue it so paid. Showed me the invoice the next day, I nearly fell over.
Considering we've bought 3 hilux's and the 200 Sahara from them in last 2 years, and supposed to sign up for a 150 next week, we rang the fleet manager and demanded a meeting.
He promptly came over, within 2 hours, and we asked him to explain how a 9 month old car needs a fuel filter and extra oil between services, a hand break adjustment on an auto, $140 to flash the computer, and why we were charged for it all when we have fixed price servicing?
As for oil, you'll find the v8 diesels used to chew fuel, I'm talking about liters and liters between services.
While the clearing code seems ridiculous, the rest seems completely normal, if not cheap even. The fuel filters are about $90 retail.2011 150series GXL

It will do 80 odd thousand this year.Originally posted by Chriso57 View Postwooley - how many kays are you doing and do you have concerns with the fuel quality you are getting? Serious question.
Chriso
I also change the filters on my ute at similar intervals.
No concerns with the fuel quality I just don't like how relaxed Toyota seems to be about filtration.
Cheap peace of mind really.2011 150series GXL

Wooley that's some serious miles!
Something to consider when changing any filter is that when first fitted most filters take some time to "load" up. This is the process where the filter holes fill up slightly, after which the filtration actually improves. Generally filters get "better" at filtering over time until they clog up to the point where they bypass, which is when you get real problems. I'm not sure if the standard fuel filter has a bypass?
Cheap knock-off filters often use cheaper filter materials, so there is no real way of knowing what level of filtration they provide. They also sometimes have dodgy bypass valves that may open prematurely which means the filter never does anything.
This also applies for oil filters and that combined with the lack of cleanliness of new oil and contamination of oil change equipment means that sometimes you can do more harm by changing oil/filters too often. And dark oil does not mean it needs to be changed, but that's a whole 'nother story.
This is an interesting article about problems with diesel fuel quality, increasing tolerances on injection systems and diesel fuel filters www.donaldson-filters.com/070616.pdf. Its got me thinking about fitting a second fuel filter.Last edited by krypto; 26-07-2012, 12:16 PM.Steve

I'm booked into my dealer tomorrow for a 30k service. Got a phone call today asking if I wanted the injectors cleaned. $200 plus!! At this stage I've said no.
They claimed you should get it done very 20k or so. Sounds like it should be in another of the PP threads!
Anyway was interested if anyone has had this done and or worth the $
Cheers

It gets to a point where your $210 service + $200 is cheaper to go to a good local mechanic.Originally posted by Pete67 View PostI'm booked into my dealer tomorrow for a 30k service. Got a phone call today asking if I wanted the injectors cleaned. $200 plus!! At this stage I've said no.

That $200 would be 2 bottles of Toyota injector cleaner worth about ~$45.Originally posted by Pete67 View PostI'm booked into my dealer tomorrow for a 30k service. Got a phone call today asking if I wanted the injectors cleaned. $200 plus!! At this stage I've said no.
