  • VX -vs- Kakadu. What are the differences exactly?

    Hi everyone,

How are we all doing? Just a quick one. I've tried searching high and low for the answer to my question but cannot find a definitive one for the life of me so I am now turning to my Pradopoint family for help.

I am looking at selling my 120 GXL soon to get the new 150 VX (my god it looks good with HID headlights). So far, I have worked this out:

    UPDATED SPECS AFTER CONSULTING PRADOPOINT.

    PRADO VX and KAKADU models:
    - 17 speaker JBL sound system with bluetooth, iPod, etc. from Oct. 2011 production
    - DVD satellite navigation system from Oct. 2011 production
    - All the acronyms under the sun ie. ABi (ABS with Intelligence), BA, EBD, TRC, VSC, HSA, DAC, KDSS
    - Leather interior
    - Premium leather trim steering wheel + gearknob
    - 18x7.5" wheels
    - 3 zone climate control (driver/passenger/rear)
    - Optitron cluster display with trip computer
    - Electric folding rear seats
    - Front rear parking sensors

KAKADU features on top of VX:
    - Side/front view cameras
    - Sunroof
    - Woodgrain centre console and door trims
    - Radar cruise control
    - Multi-Terrain Select system
    - Cooler box
    - Rear seat DVD entertainment system
    - Self-levelling rear suspension
    - Independent centre and rear diff lock

If anyone else can think of anything, please post and I will edit accordingly.

    Cheers!

And to add... Kakadu has woodgrain, and VX doesn't. BIG PLUS IN MY BOOKS =)

      Hi ON888,

I think that you have pretty much nailed it on the head. I cant think of any other differences. I'm not 100% sure that the VX has the Crawl feature, I think that may only be available on the Kakadu, unless that has changed with the 2012 spec.

I have also got a VX D4D on order, expected around February. Also I have to agree with your comment on the wood grain dash!

Are you looking at the Diesel or Petrol?

Expect to pay around $75k to $76k drive away (depending on NSW on road costs)

      Cheers,

      Jeff

I would assume that it would have crawl. Both VX and Kakadu are mechanically the same car at the end of the day.

I'm looking at getting a petrol VX. Yes! When I saw that the VX did not have woodgrain, I was even more excited! I was actually planning on getting the Kakadu and asking them to swap all the woodgrain with the ZR and GXL interior parts haha! They look great without the woodgrain (sorry to all Kakadu owners here!)

The extra $10-15k on top for the Kakadu model was justified before the Oct. 2011 production VX rolled out. I am actually glad that I waited as I can now snap up a VX with navigator minus the sunroof and cruise control system.

Happy days ahead. I love my 120 as it runs like a dream, but it's time for an upgrade.

        Cheers,

I'll have to test drive a VX and a Kakadu to see if there is a big difference between the two in terms of suspension. If it is, we may be able to justify the extra $$$$$ but the VX is looking very good as I have not had an issue with ground clearance or ride comfort with my current 120 GXL.

Yes, centre and rear whereas VX has only centre.

I'd like to think the VX has Crawl, but here is an insert from Toyota Website,

Hill-start Assist is accompanied by our CRAWL technology, which is available on Kakadu and ZR++. First seen on the LandCruiser 200, it's like an off-road cruise control for 4WD.
Whether you're about to go up or down a steep slope, over rocks, across a stream or through a bog, simply select one of five speed settings, push a button and take your foot off the pedals, and CRAWL Control takes over. All you need to do is steer.

++Standard on Kakadu and ZR from October 2011 production.

So reading that, I would say that Crawl is Kakadu only. I am hoping that your correct, but some how I don't think it's on the VX.

I'm not sure about the diff locks!

                    Cheers

Damn... that's another feature crossed off the list. Guess I'll just have to 'crawl' through the sand dunes manually with my foot on the gas and brake pedals =P

Can confirm that there is no crawl feature in the VX, have not needed it het but. The KDSS and traction control in plenty good enough. Cheers Daniel

Also has multi terrain select where you select the terrain youre driving on eg sand. It is the only model that has a rear diff lock which is only an aftermarket option for all other models. Another feature of the radar system is Pre collision where the brakes are automatically applied to avoid a rear ender should the driver fail to brake. As mentioned by others the rear air suspension, drivers memory seat and cooler box.

Yes, The VX only has the center diff-lock. CRAWL and DAC are different. The VX has DAC (down-hill Assist Control), which is similar to CRAWL, but is solely for hill descents (forwards or in reverse).

I used all the electrics on a 4x4 course recently. They are fantastic. The KDSS is fantastic... not only for off-road articulation, but for on-road handling. The car wouldn't be the same without the stability control (perhaps that's just me driving it like it's a sedan)... I've had it help me in the wet and on the sand.

Good to see the sat-nav and sound system are now standard... luckily they were an option when I bought mine earlier this year. The only thing I wish it had from the Kakadu is the seat memory (I can't get in where my wife leaves the seat)... even a top-end camry has that.

[Edit]: Oh yeah, although the sat-nav/sound system integrate really nicely with the car, I would *consider* going for a VMS system next time, because you can't get off-road maps onto the factory version.

OK OK this is good information. We can put together a constructive list of what the VX and Kakadu models come with. Valuable information for people that are looking at buying these great cars. I'll edit my original thread so its up to date.
