  • Upgrading to 150 series

    Hi all,
Have had a 2008 Grande since 2009 and very happy but is getting high in K,s and time to move on. Looking at an 2011 Kakadu TD (dont like the looks but) and getting a little scared after reading problem with rattles vibrations and engine lag also the hereditary shaft clunk etc etc.
Can anybody put my mind at ease coz i dont want to go european.
How annoying are the issues and or has Toyota sorted most of them.

    Hi Marcus

Go petrol, my 150 is 2 years old, no rattles, vibrations, tail shaft clunk and really happy with it. We have done a lot of country touring and serious 4WDriving in it.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

Hi Marcus, I had a 2004 GXL Diesel for 4 years/100.000 kms without a single problem. Best car I owned ever. Since April this year, I have a 150 GXL Diesel (manual) and have done 16.000 kms so far. The D4D engine is definitely noisier than the old style Diesel I had, but should be no worse than the D4D in your 120 now. The 150 interior is very quiet and probably that is why rattles and vibrations are more noticeable. I am a bit disappointed in this, but overall it is still a fantastic vehicle. My perception of Diesel engines was that these were indestructible and basically run on "anything" that burns. This is no longer the case with common rail (D4D) engines and not just for Toyota. That is one major benefit for Diesel gone in my opinion. There is still the benefit of economy (around 10l/100 as opposed to 14l/100). Would I buy a 150 again? yes. Would I buy a Diesel again? probably; I'd be looking into LPG before I did. Fred

The hesitation and shift problems have been fixed with a flash update. The vibrations are because the vehicle moves into top gear to soon and can be fixed by driving in "S" mode (the flash upgrade should fix this as well. Mine is being done next week) I spend time with the folks in a 4wd club and when members come for a ride in a 150 Prado the cannot believe how quiet and strong they are compared with other vehicles. I have had to get used to having less space than a 100 series Cruiser but this vehicle is better in almost every other way, power, tow capacity, noise levels, fuel economy, comfort and the ability to keep moving forward (TC). The only down sides are less space, not as smooth in the bush and less confident on side slopes. I would buy another and have recommended the vehicle to other now proud owners.

          Hey Guys,
I'm in the same boat as Marcus as my lease ends soon in my current Prado. So given that according to the lease company the Petrol and Diesel are roughly the same cost to run which one would you choose if you were to buy again? Are the Diesel issues really that common (especially the rattle/injector issue) ? And if so would you consider keeping the diesel after the warranty runs out?

After reading through the forum with regards to all the diesel issues I am surprised your all so calm about it and that it still sells at 90 or so percent of all prado's sold. Toyota seem to have really dropped the ball on this one.

          thanks
          Kelvin.
