  • Speed on SatNav?

I have the Kakadu model, one thing I have noticed is there is no speed that shows on the Satnav screen. I can go and buy a $100 SatNav system and it'll have the speed show on the screen but not my one. I asked Toyota today and he said he didn't know but would ring Toyota head office and find out. He said he agreed that it should show the speed on the screen.

What speed do you go off the sat nav or the speedo. I have a hema and it reads about 2 to 3kms faster which can make all the difference, so if anyone knows I'm keen to hear.

That's the same with other manufacturer's SatNav's too. I always presumed that because it's difficult (impossible really) to have the speed that is calculated by the GPS match what the speedo is displaying, they would not enable it on the SatNav. Imagine the petty complaints that could never be resolved anyway.

The GPS is accurate, no matter what size tires or how much they have worn. The same cannot be said for the in-dash speedo display.

Also keep in mind the ADR provides for +10% variance in speedo reading. That's the difference between drving exactly on the limit and being one of those annoyingly slow drivers in the right-hand lane!

Edit: The ADR requires the speedo must not under-read. I found this source: Australian Design Rule 18/03 Instrumentation

Toyota set the speedo at approx 6-7 KM's below accual speed. So when the speedo says 100 km's you would accually be doing approx 93 or 94 km's. I can understand why they do this but they have a SatNav which is more accurate and I would think nothing could come back on them. Saying they would have heaps of people complaining about the two different speed readings between the SatNav and the speedo .... that is why they would leave the speed of the SatNav.

My 150 with 265/70/17's fitted (oversize by about 22 mm) now reads the same as the 2 GPS's I have in the car as far as my eyesight can gauge.

I have a GXL and the speedo reads about 5 km's over but if you zero the average speed on the tripmeter and keep an eye on it while you are on cruise it will read the same as my navman not the same as the speedo.

Essentially what Toyota have done is to pull the pointer off the speedo and set it so that the speedo reads around 4/5 kmh faster. The ECU is fairly accurate (which trip computer reads directly from) and those with a scangauge will confirm that the ECU and a GPS read the same. That is assuming you haven't radically changed the overall wheel diameter.

A question for Richoson - you have increased wheel diameter by 22mm and the speedo and GPS read the same. What does your trip meter display if you set cruise to 100kmh by the speedo/GPS and reset average speed on the trip meter?

I can confirm that my scanguage and in dash gps read the same in my 150, if I am doing 100kmh on the speedo, the gps and scan gauge is displaying 93kmh.

                    Hi Starbuck

Haven't done that next time I'm toodling down the highway I'll try it out.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

                      Hi Richo,

I think you will find the trip meter will read lower - bigger tyres so the wheel travels further each rev than the ECU is programmed for. If so, then most likely the odometer will read out as well.

                        Hi,

You can access the speed in the Toyota Satnav if you enter a diagnostic mode.

If you hold down the Info/Tel button and turn your lights (parkers) on off on off on off on off
                        A menu will appear.
                        Select Function check
                        Select Vehicle Sensors

You will then see the information that you require!

                        Regards
                        Brett

Did the test yesterday, stole the car from SWMBO and set the cruise control at 100KPH on the analogue speedo, GPS read 100KPH and the average speed on the trip computer read 96KPH average speed.
