  • Radiator insect screen - toyota bullbar

    Hi Guys

I have got the genuine toyata bar on my prado, but looking at it, the holes in the front are huge, and go straight to the radiator.

What have you guys done to fix this? I am thinking I should put something there!

i wouldn't put anything there - the holes are there to stop the car over heating.

yeah - but the big holes down the bottom?
surely some insect screen would be better than a million bugs in the radiator?

All you will need is an insect screen to cover the radiator and the holes, will keep the bugs out but let the air through. If you use a good quality screen, it will keep out the stones as well (except maybe for the bigger rocks) but it is usually the stones and the bugs that are the problem, not the rocks.

Just make sure it is a tight fit, not too loose, or buy a ready made one at a 4WD store or a 4WD show.

I made one out of black shadecloth, sewed it up with a sleave on each side and slid it a piece of bamboo garden stake in each side and then cable tied it in place behind the grill and refitted the grill. You would never know it was there unless you gave it a gclose look and it has not created any overheating issues in 30,000km. The best feature of a shadecloth screen apart from the low cost is that it is self cleaning.

Not that I am aware of, however, I bought a tie-on plastic screen (fairly tough material) from a 4WD show over here in Sydney.

                The owner's website is www.enduromatmate.com.au

He told me he will mail out orders.

The screen covers the inside of the 2 inner uprights on my TJM bar, and from the top bar to underneath the bar. I added my own straps. I use it for insect plagues or country running.

I saved the old metal insect screen from my 80 series when I sold it. I removed the grill from the Prado and zip tied the screen to the back of the grill. I only had to cut a small section out of the screen, where the bonnet lock is located in the top centre, added rust converter to the cuts and fixed the grill back to it's location. Have not had any problem yet in 2 years and it catches insects, leaves, stones, etc.

On the front plate of the TJM bar are 2 large ventilation holes, which are not covered by the screen attached to the grill, but are covered when I add the plastic mesh screen. So far no problems when the plastic mesh screen is not on, as the holes only expose each bottom corner of the radiator.

I have found that black plastic gutter guard cut to shape and fitted to grill with a few discreet cable ties works very well.
Looks neat and lets through plenty of air whist stopping the bugs and stones. Can be fitted easily to bar also.
