  • updating to 150

I am thinking of updating from my 120 VX V6 auto to an auto 150. The quandry of course is which engine. If you had a 120 V6 auto and have gone to a 150 V6 auto how have you found it in terms of performance AND fuel economy? Is it better? Problems/ dislikes v. that combination in the 120? OR if you went from 120 V6 auto to D4D auto how have you found it in comparison re. performance and economy, driveability etc. I guess what I am getting at is will I get another petrol or go the diesel.I have read all the petrol v. diesel stuff but what I am after is the experiences of people who have actually made this move rather than the 'diesel tows better but the injectors die while the petrol is smooth and quiet but likes a drink" type of stuff. Had a petrol 120 auto, now have a 150 d4d auto. More power from the petrol, drove more like a car, but also drank more! The diesel took a bit of time before I fell in love with it, initially I questioned whether I had done the right thing, but very happy now. The only reason I went diesel was for a bit more reliability for if and when I do water crossings(up the Cape this year). If fuel isnt a concern and you dont play around in water much, Id be inclined to save a few bucks on the purchase price and stick with the V6.
    Cheers

Another factor to take into account is resale.
I am fairly sure used D4D's sell for higher prices than petrol.
The higher price is proportionally more than you pay for diesel on new purchase.
This is true for most brands of 4x4's however I must say my experience is with Landrovers that is until Friday.

Thanks, Rob,thats the thinking I used when I got the V6 120 which was about 5k cheaper than the equivalent D4D. I know the breakeven for the diesel is a lot of kms away, probably more than even I think at my average of 12-15k km pa. I am really interested in what Adam said [but with diff and transmiision breathers raised, a snorkel, a water blind if it is over about 600mm deep and plenty of WD40, water crossings are no more of a problem than a diesel. Day to day driveability is what I am after from those who have changed. So far petrol looks good- even a 10000 trip only costs about $500 extra. Neil

U r right pug, mine is been delivered next Wednesday and on the way home tonight I was reflecting on how good the 120 is and how it drives like the day I got it, given that the 150 apperently has a flatter torque curve it should be one sweet ride!

I will be interested to see how the new one pans out. if it is better then the 120 then that is acompelling reason to stay petrol. Neil

                    I thought it was $700.

Why would you even bother with petrol

I found only $1k difference when looking at the rrp. But when you do the deal, it can easily be a 5k difference.

Hi, I've had a 07 D4D, 07 V6 and just this week picked up a 12/11 V6. I went the V6 mainly because of the D4D reliabliity issues. Not sure why people say how reliable they are when even in this forum there are hundreds of post complaining about them and 0 for the petrol ?? Compared to the 120 the 150 is far smoother to drive however so far the 120 felt like it had more punch. However the 150 only has 140km on the clock atm so it will probably loosen up. Only one thing that annoys me about the 150 is that the V6 requires 95 RON whereas the 120 was 91 RON. Seems a bit like false advertising when they say better fuel economy and more power but dont advertise that it is tuned for higher octane fuel !
When you do the lease costs of Petrol vs diesel the cost are only about $40/month different in favor of the diesel. But I'm pretty sure I wouldn't keep a diesel past its warranty expiry and we plan to keep this car for 10 years.

Suggest you take both for a test drive, the big thing is overtaking in the Diesel. Its slow if you are in D and you put the foot down at a 100Km/HR, by the time it changes down and get going the overtaking opportunity is over. I either floor it from the onset or push it into sports mode and then overtake.

I am a diesel fan for the big suv 4wd`s, as the petrol ones are still gutless compared to a normal car. If you want performance get a car don`t expect it from a 2.3 t overweight, top heavy rig. So for me its diesel all the way.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats.
