I fitted D694 bridgestones the day after I got the car, have now done 43000Km on them. They are much better braking and handling tyre on dry and in particular wet than original. On loose gravelly dirt road they are ok, but don`t have as much grip as a tyre with more aggressive tread pattern. Very good in sand. About as good as BFG AT in mud, but they were on a different vehicle, so not a real good comparison.
I would get them again, but will go for the LT version next time.

Have driven mates 90 Prado with Coopers ST and was disappointing in poor grip on wet bitumen, apparently the tyres were good in the wet when new, but not after a couple of years and 50000Km. Do they go hard after a while ?

Its not that wet grip on bitumen is my primary criteria when selecting a tyre and I found the BFG A/T and Mud Terrain to be good at this, but ignoring it can get you into real trouble.

I have heard the MT 4 ribs are very noisy anyone confirm? I would 100% go the AT3's their current they are getting great reviews and nice and quite. For a 80-20 mix of driving there is no need to go any more aggressive than a AT3 or Bridgestone and if your 20% off road is mainly sand just stick with the factory rubber their fine on sand .
2010 Kakadu with all the usual stuff.... Build up thread below

I picked up my new D4D GXL last week and went straight to the tyre shop and got a set of MT ATZ 4 ribs. My last 5-6 sets of tyres have been BFG All Terrains but I thought I would try out the MT's for a change. Having only driven 700kms on road so far, and no off road at all, the first thing that I noticed was the road noise, they are certainly noisier than the BFG's. They are a more agressive tyre so probably should be noisier.

Not a deal breaker, but something to get used to, I would expect them to perform well off road, but won't get a chance to try them out until Easter.

What I find interesting is that tyre manufacturers make a point of mentioning the value of a tread pattern, ie this for corner grip, this for channelling water, this for braking, noise, wear, comfort etc.

I liked the BFG A/T and wouldn`t have problems fitting them again.
But when I see a tyre like the BFG A/T and these General Grapper AT 2 ( which a work colleague has on his ute and loves) I start wondering if there is something to it or doesn`t matter on a 4wd tyre?
The general looks similar to the BFG A/T see here http://www.generaltire.com.au/tires/...ber-ATsup2-sup

            Compared to the Michelin

            http://www.michelin.com.au/Home/Prod.../LatitudeCross

or the the D694 from Bridgestone
            http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/treads/d694.aspx

I can see that its not a concern with Mud tyres, as the primary aim is to generate grip in mud, but with A/T a well designed tyre should make a difference in all round ability. What has been written in the reviews?

Two to three years of driving and putting up with a bad tyre can be frustrating, so I am less concerned about cost, but I need to be happy with the tyre. If its no good its like a poke in the eye every time you get in the car.

Well, after reviewing ALL the options available in Australia I went with 265/70R17 Cooper AT/3s as they are light tyre construction but also have an S speed rating so a great balance for on and off road. I would have got the Scorpion AT/Rs or Yokohama Geolander AT/S but I couldn't find a LT265/70R17 in Australia for love nor money. I have heard the Scorpions wear quickly on Australian roads but Sozjot's experience seems to prove otherwise. Wear also seems to be a consistent problem with the D694s so I took them off my list.
2009 Prado 150 D4D GXL with 265/70R17 Cooper AT/3 tyres, Max Trax, HR tow bar, Airtec snorkel, UHF and the usual recovery gear. On the list: cargo barrier, Bilstein shocks and King springs, deluxe winch bar, 10000lb winch, Lightforce 240 XGT spotlights, dual spare wheel carrier

For what it is worth, I have had MT FC-II on my Hilux, MT 4-rib on my 120 Prado, and will be putting them on the new 150 when it arrives. Having had the MT 4-rib down to 6 PSI over the weekend at Beachport, and having no issues, I can highly recommend them

We have just put some STZ on our altitude. They look sweet and are very quiet. And they do fit in the spare wheel cover. A bit pricey but worth it

Hi Disco4 yes i was wondering what tyres can fit in the wheel cover as i had a look the other day at mine and if there is a 30mm difference in the rolling circumference which the tyre diameter should only increase by 15mm I think.

I went Yokahama AT's in standard 265/65R17's. They have done 20,000km including about 4,000 on outback dirt roads. I got them based on price, availability and they came with a puncture repair or replacement guarantee.

Yes, the Yokohamas do seem to come with the best guarantee followed by Cooper

What don't the brand new tyres on your car do that you want to spend upwards of $1400 on?

Well, they should last twice as long for starters. And if the tyres are brand new he should be able to get around $1k for the set on the second-hand market. Besides, while the Grandtreks bare the "AT" moniker they are not really an all-terrain tyre so it's a good idea to change them ASAP if you are planning to spend any significant amount of time off-road.

The taller tyres also provide another 1/2" of lift which is useful on a vehicle that has notoriously little clearance to the transfer case.

I'll be honest and say I waited till I'd done 45,000km till I changed mine (after three punctures, all of them on-road) but then I've only just started doing anything more than the odd dawdle down the beach.

The brand new tyres don't have much sidewall protection, a big issue if you do much serious off roading. Also my BFGs cost me 800 changeover from new and should last longer.

I just put 265 70 17s maxxis bighorns on my gxl

I've been using these tyres for years on my last 4wd and I love them to bits!

They don't have the same hype as other brand tyres but I can not fault them

They're a very aggressive tread pattern so there is a bit of noise, but that's part of the fun of having a 4wd!

The spare wheel cover still fits too.
