How is warranty affected after modifications?

Hi All,

Has anyone had any experience with making claims for warranty work after having their rigs modified ie suspension, dual batteries etc?

I am pretty comfortable that there won't be an issue with batteries, snorkel etc, the big on for me is if I will have any issues after completing a 2in lift and upgrading shocks/springs.

My dealer fitted the suspension, bar, winch & snorkel.

All ARB stuff & the dealer actually fitted it.

Paid a bit more because of LCT but the dealer prices were better than I could get so this savings offset the LCT impact.

At least it is all covered by the dealer now.

Similar scenario happened to my son when he bought a new Navara & the dealer fitted a suspension lift.

A component broke, initially the dealer said take it up with the supplier, the supplier said take it up with the manufacturer.
We said you fitted it, you fix it - they did.
The component was where the torsion bar fits into the car for want of better terminology.

Hi Hutch,

I went to Toyota with the paint bubbling and coming off the inserts for the TJM t13 bar, because they, Toyota, arranged most of the extras for my 150. (Like Disco4).

The Warranty Clerk spent a bit of time checking it out & rang TJM & it was fixed by TJM but, everything was arranged by Toyota.
They indicated to me that any problems with the extras to see them (Toyota) first, as they were the purchaser of the extras.

Different scenario, TJM payed, if u cracked your chassis as an example I am sure they would say it was because of the bar, we don't want to know about it.

I would be be checking into that a little more, most dealers will outsource those type of installs to an external provider (possibly attached to a local 4WD shop) as they aren't experts in the kit. At the end of the day they could also argue all they can provide is the original manufacturers warranty of the goods installed, and not modify their own warranty.

I suspect they would/could argue you insisted on the changed componenets whether they recommended them or not/warrented or not, therefore buyer beware

If you guys experience issues with getting items repaired/replaced under warranty due to the run around of "it's not our fault speak to the manufacturer", it's always good to remember the good old ACCC laws and drop them into the conversation with your dealer if required.

In a nutshell, the laws state that your contract of sale, therefore any warranty is with whoever you handed your money to for the purchase. So that means if you purchased and paid for your ARB/TJM items through Toyota, it is solely up to Toyota to chase up the ARB/TJM and rectify your faults through the manufacturers warranty. Don't accept them fobbing you off by saying "speak to the manufacturer", it's their responsibility.

I had an ARB Delux bar fitted by ARB. Apparently this caused a joint on the wiper washer bottle to rupture. Toyota wouldn't touch it even though it was a $2 part, and a 5 minute fix. The quote was "we'd be shot if we touched it". This being my first warranty claim experience, I expect it to be like all other insurance claims, where the first response is "No" if there is any doubt about it, and then you have the burden of evidence to prove or disprove the specific claim. Essentially what I'm saying is that I believe accessories not manufactured and/or fitted by Toyota is ammunition against warranty claim.

P.S> Big plug for ARB in Fyshwick, who said they'd look at it on short notice, and then proceeded to fix it in a few minutes for free.

On the other side of the coin if you go to ARB and they recommend an upgrade and fit it for you, which later causes damage to your car they would be liable and have to repair the vehicle.

I have a mate in the tyre game, and when someone comes in and says hey I want tyre size XYZ on my 4wd and he knows it is oversized and illegal, he refuses to fit them to the vehicle. He will fit them to rims, and help them load them into the back of the vehicle and invoice accordingly but will not let illegal tyres get fitted to a vehicle as he can then be held responsible.

That happened to me with Beaurepairs when I bought my 265/75 tyres. At first they got all defensive and refused to sell them to me because they were "Landcruiser" tyres. Then they thought about it for a second before I walked out the door and called me back and offered to fit them to my rims provided I fitted them to the car myself. They just didn't want to record sale next to a registration plate number in the computer. I could understand and was just happy I got them as I had my heart set on getting them. I had a mate who was nice enough to drive me to the store in two trips to get the tyres fitted to the rims.

I've got one;
A well known long range fuel tank fitted by ARB before the vehicle ( a hilux ) was delivered.
Fuel pick-up was incorrectly fitted causing it to contact and rub on the lower surface of the tank. ( I am pretty sure they use the original pick up and sender ).
The rubbing ( over the subsequent off road driving ) and maybe the failure to clean the inside of the tank prior to fitting causes filings to enter the fuel system causing failure of all injectors and the pump ( about $10,000.00 from memory ).
Toyota blamed the tank because it was not original and ARB blamed toyota because they ( logically ) said that the toyota filters should have prevented any foreign matter from ending up where it shouldn't.
Result was that neither covered the damage.

Had similar experience with the trim along the cut line in the bumper rubbing the paint off the bullbar, simple fix, but Toyota said not our problem, ARB said not our problem, ended up pulling off the trim myself and retrimming it with a Stanley knife.
Probably not helped though by buying the car ( accessories fitted by dealer, prior to pickup - lease deal) in Townsville, living in Clermont and servicing in Mackay and Marrochydore ( did a few trips while we were in QLD)
