  • Overall resale value of the 150 series

    Hi All,

This post is probably like closing the door after the horse has bolted but here it goes.

I was interested in people thoughts on how people percieve the resale will be in the 150 series and whether people think that there will be such a noticable difference between the Petrol and the Diesel as there presently is for the 120 series.

The reason I ask this is that many dealer quote that the Diesel will hold their value far better than the Petrol but given that probably 85% of new Prado's seem to be Diesel I am not so convinced?

You only need to look at the 120 D4D prices to answer your question, there were heaps sold also.

I agree with the 120 series but I am not too sure whether the 150 series will be the same? I recon 80 % petrol vs 20% diesel in the 120 series now in the 150 series similar figures but in the diesel's favour?

Supply and demand now it is far easier to get a diesel.

When I was looking for a new GXL I noted that the prices of good used 150's were higher than fleet pricing on a new one.

        Ended up getting an Altitude.

I here you on the second hand ones I vowed never to buy another new car ....................unless it was a Toyota Prado simply because they hold their value so well. About 20% diffence on a 3 year old car with 80K on the clock than buying new. Difference was simply too small to search high a low for a decent near new vehicle.

I went through the same thing looking at second hand, just couldn't justify paying nearly the same price for a 2yo with about 80K's as a new one was on lease.

I wonder how much the initial supply issues and ridiculous wait times (some up to 12 months long) of the 150 have attributed to the 120's strong resale value? I anticipate that the 150's will not hold their value as well as the 120's did, but something drastic would need to happen to make them not one of the most sort after (i.e. expensive) used cars to purchase. I am sure we will not loose out too much....

Yep, I had the exact same thing. I paid under $60k for my GXL (fleet) - not sure if it had anything to do with the wait times at the time but a 12-18 month old vehicle with a few clicks on it was the same price or more!

Add to buying one two years old - my work policy is that vehicles can't be any more than 7 years old so buying a bit older one just wasn't worth it. Also much easier to just walk in and buy one, not have to search high and low for a decent second hand one!

Interesting thread as I have just purchased a new GXL 150. I also was in the market for a second hand one but after trying to walk out of the new car show room twice was offered a new car that was cheaper than the used car I was looking at! Go figure. I had a choice of colour too. Thanks to everyone for making this a really informative forum - I'll be browsing thru all the topics for years to come now.

I can't comment on the comparison with petrol but I was looking at online adds a couple of days ago and out of eight 150 series GX TDs on offer the cheapest was a two year old with 150,000 km on the clock for $5,000 less than I paid for mine new. Isn't the standard for all vehicles 50% retained value after three years? Did anyone notice that the Prado holds seventh place on the sales charts for April 2012? Does this mean Toyota is catching up and the waiting list is getting shorter or is the Prado getting that popular in spite of the waiting list.

Ridiculous what they are asking. I was looking at two year old cars and secured a new one for probably a few K more. Mind you I subsequently changed my order and got the Altitude model. You can get in Melbourne a new TD GXL auto in the 58's and a Petrol in the 57's. Altitudes around the 65K mark. I looked at some of the prices they are asking on the 120 series and cant see the value in going secondhand. As for the waiting list it seems that there are quite a few Altitudes ready for delivery but when I order my GXL I was told 3 months wait.
