  • Removing Roof Rails on GXL

    Hi guys,

I am back after quite a long absence from the site.

I am thinking of replacing my current 120 series Prado GX with a 150 series GXL.

Due to a very low clearance in my garage I am not sure if the new car will fit. I was thinking of removing permanently roof rails of the 150 series if I get one.

The question is: is it possible to remove the roof rails permanently and blank off the mounting holes in the car's top (similar to 120 series GX)?

Can I specify a new car (GXL) wthout roof rails? Any suggestions?

    Cheers,

Yes, you can remove the factory rails.
You should be able to get the blanking panels to plug up the holes.
Of if you need roof racks anyway, get the 3-bar system or even the Rhino Pioneer Platfrom rack and it comes with feet that stays with the car and it has a plate that you screw on top of the feet to close up the holes.

It will be better than spending money on the Toyota blanking plugs, or maybe someone on PP has some floating around.

Another thing to remember is the 150 is lower than the 120 by 25mm, not much but when it is tight every bit helps.

Thanks guys, very helpful, as usual.

I actually realised that the 150 series is a bit lower than my 120, so no dramas there with the garage door clearance.
I just need to relocate my rods rack a bit higher.

            Cheers
