  • What is the difference between "TRC" (traction control) in H4, and "Active TRC" in L4

I was just reading the owners manual and came across "Active TRC for L4 mode". Is this the same as the normal traction control (TRC) in H4?

As I thought as soon as you went into L4 traction and stability control are automatically turned off? Do I have to turn this one off as well if I do not want it on?

I was confused to start with, but after reading the manual I am even more confused...

TRC in low Range will brake any wheel that is spinning and send more drive to the wheels that have traction, it is fantastic for offroading if u r picking up wheels. It is almost as good as having lockers.

The only time u may turn off the TRC is on sand as u don't want to slow momentum, in saying that a recent trip to Fraser I didn't bother turning traction or stability off.

So just to clarify, I have to manually hold down the switch to turn off TRC even when in L4? I thought it turned off automatically when L4 was selected.

I had to keep the new girl in L4 second gear all the way up the beach to keep up momentum (while towing a 14ft van). I thought the traction control was off because the light was not flashing on the dash and there were not any funny mechanical noises that indicated it was having to kick in. But I know I had plenty of wheel spin trying to keep momentum. I may have not struggled as much if I had turned it off

Not quite Hutch, In H4 press the button briefly and you have turned the stability control off (important for sand driving). Put the Prado in L4 and the stability control turns off automatically. Either way with the stability control turned off press and hold the SC button for around five seconds and another indicator light lights up 'TRC OFF'. Now this is not quite right as the traction control does not actually turn off, it goes into a less intrusive mode. It will still stop a lifted wheel from spinning but it will no longer turn the revs down. After stopping the engine, if on restarting you still want TRC OFF you will need to do it again (same with 2nd start) as on startup both are off. TRC OFF will get you further in soft sand, snow and mud.

Glad that you said almost....................... Hutch.

But the difference between traction control and front & rear air lockers is pretty big.
