    As I mentioned in post #7 on this thread I wear photochromic spectacles, the ones that darken when exposed to sunlight. Apart from the newer ones these are next to useless as sunglasses inside a motor vehicle with even standard untinted windows. The method by which they darken is related to the UV in the light they are exposed to. Mine remain almost totally clear or untinted whilst in the car behind the windows, once outside they darken appreciably and fairly quickly. The newer varieties of these spectacles have been changed and respond to bluish light as well as UV and so will darken behind window glass. In the car I now wear a pair of permanently tinted prescription polaroid sunglasses on bright sunny days.

    I am not saying no uV gets through the standard windows, some does, but the normal glass windows do attenuate UV to a fair degree. Laminated glass windscreens with their plastic layer attenuate it even more.

    Heat perception is caused by infrared radiation not UV.

        Hey life's a gamble so take the punt and don't put a reputable tint on and hope that your cars interior doesn't become damaged and that your passengers wont be exposed to excess UV, see ya at the beach I'll notice you as you will be the sunburnt family.

          I put tinting on to reject heat from infrared and to cut the glare. Automotive glass already has UV protection as evident by the UV meter the tinter used prior to tinting the Prado. This reminds me that I haven't tinted the privacy glass. I only got the front windows done.

            Don't take this the wrong way, but that link from the Cancer Council says, and I quote:
            Applying films and tints will only be effective in providing protection against UVR if the windows are closed, so air-conditioning of vehicles may also be required.

              Hmm, yes. Reading the Cancer Council info you get the idea that they are being very conservative and careful in case they say something that people could take the wrong way and then sue them.

              The RACV site on window tinting is fairly blunt on the perceived reasons for getting window tinting. About the only one that holds up is for security reasons, stopping people seeing what you have left lying on the seats and in the luggage area.

                Richoson, your comment is a classic re: Sunburnt family. I agree, UV is only a small part of the solution. It was an extra $200 to tint the rear windows, I think that is well worth it. If you keep the car for 5 years, that is $40 per year for comfort and heat protection on the basis it adds $0 to resale value. A cheap investment really.

                        That is the price we charge the dealership.then they put their price on top.We sold our Tint-a-Car shop 7 years ago and we don't have the big overheads anymore and are now a independent shop but we still buy the same window tint.

                          Reading through posts it looks like there are different opinions for additional UV protection. I wonder what is real experience of people who did not UV protect over Prado privacy glass - do they have interior deteriorated over time? My first car - Toyota Corolla had clear windows and over 10 years interior was badly melted all over top. I understand need for UV and IR protection for car with clear windows but would be interesting to know if it is the same case with Prado.

                            Sounds like a lot of you people have fallen for the sales pitch. Automotive glass blocks most of the harmful UV radiation.

                            Do a small amount of your own research instead of taking what Salesman tells you as gospel and repeating it here.

                            Sunbunt family down the beach.... lol

                              There are two types of UV radiation that reach us on Earth: UVA, which causes cancer, and UVB, which causes cancer and sun burn.

                              Tempered glass (used for side and rear windows) does block UVB, but it does not block much UVA -- maybe as little as 20% of it according to this Cancer Council fact sheet.

                              I think it's fair to say that window tint is needed if you want to block cancer causing UVA, but it is not needed to prevent sunburn because tempered glass already blocks most UVB.

                              Does the privacy glass in a Prado also block UVA (the type not blocked by normal tempered glass)? I don't know, but I would assume no, unless stated otherwise by Toyota.

                              I have a Prado GX, so no privacy glass for me. I have window tint applied to all windows mainly to reduce the chance of any us getting skin cancer in the future, but also to reduce glare and heat.

                                Ive always remembered it as the following - 3 types of UV:

                                UVA = Causes premature Ageing
                                UVB = Causes Burning
                                UVC = Causes Cancer (most damaging)

                                My understanding that most tempered glass (or glass in general) blocks a fair chunk of the UV (if not all of it) especially for the UVC
