  • Smart Key Replacement

So I have had a look around and found a few threads on 120 key replacement, but not much for the 150.

Toyota want roughly $500 for a new spare smart key, but I was wondering if a key from another Toyota vehicle would work? The part number is '89904B 60560 - Transmitter Sub Assembly'. What I'm getting at is the possibility of buying a Prius or Lexus transmitter which come up fairly regularly on overseas part websites. For example

Then it would be a case of convincing a dealer to program the key.

What do you reckon my chances are?

I believe they use difference frequencies in different markets so may not work.

Otherwise I'd be wearing one of the smart key watches from Japan.

Hey, I remember that now from a previous thread! Pretty hard to lose a smart key around your wrist.

Just pop on eBay and see how much the fobs are. If you can get match FCC IDs (that's what I picked up from a description on eBay) then it'll work with your car. You just need a dealer to program the fob, and a lock smith to cut the small key.

Last I checked, they were around the $200-300 mark (+programming + cutting)

My key fob has 'HYQ14ACX' on it, which turns out to be the same as the current model Prius. Although it looks like there is an extra button on the Prius fob, it looks like a panic or boot release button?

I also had a quick look around on a Prius forum and found a few discussions on this topic. They ended up using a couple of different FCC codes (HYQ14ACX and AAB) and even an original Lexus key fob was working. Although some of these guys did have access to the Toyota diagnostic software, so they were able to program themselves without seeing a dealer.

So I am leaning towards picking up either a Lexus or Prius fob (around $40-$50), but have to find a dealer or locksmith who will program it first. Or should I just bite the bullet and pay a premium for an original fob? Arrgghhh

Maybe look into buying the OBD2 diagnostic software on eBay which you may be able to program your own smart keys with... Not sure if it will do it though but worth a bit of a look...

Has anyone found a replacement more affordable key replacement option that buying the expensive keys from a dealer?

The following website looks promising. I search for the FCC numbers mentioned above and it came up in the search results:

There's discussion about a 'Toyota Intelligent Tester' on another thread "You can get one from as low as US$260 from tool company in China or pay $450 for a touch screen version or pay $1500 for a really fancy one. Just google Toyota Intelligent Tester."

I wonder if this will do the job and how hard it is to do?

Bit off Topic, but I bought a pair of these about 6mths ago as my Key Fob was getting all scracthed just from being in my pocket all the time. Don't know if they have been covered elsewhere. 2nd last service I took the Prado in for the Service Manager asked where I got them from, so I gave him the link. Said he was going to try and convince his people to supply them as a bit of a Customer Relations exercise, don't know if he had any luck.
