5000 km service

Had my Prado since about September 2012. It's now coming up to 5,000 kms. Is there anything wrong with just taking this to a local mechanic to change out the oil and filter, and then when the car reaches 10,000kms, do the fixed price service with Toyota? If I were to go to Toyota for the 5,000 kms service, would they do more than just change the oil/filter? $210 or is it $270 is a lot for just an oil change.

I got Toyota to chuck in some Penrite 5w/40 diesel oil at the 1,000 km service.

That's the way to go IMO...........pick yourself a good engine oil and stick with it.

I would suggest talking to Toyota to see what they would charge for the 5,000km service, and see what they say.

Live in southern Sydney, but bought my 150 petrol from Windsor Toyota for the good deal I received, and took it back there for the 10,000, 20,000 km, etc services.

Do not worry about the in between 5,000 services unless I have been towing the van, so for one of those 5,000 services, I contacted a Toyota dealer at Sutherland to ask the price. Was told that the intermediate services are not part of the Fixed Price Services (that is, every 10,000 kms), and the charge for the oil alone would be $190, plus labour, plus anything else needing servicing. You can guess what the final bill might be.

For the in between services, I use the same mechanic that services my wife's Corolla. He appears to be a good mechanic, also tows a caravan and knows what to check on the Prado, and is cheaper than Toyota. The mechanic stamps the service book and uses Penrite oil.

So Garbage, find a good mechanic who does not charge like a wounded bull!

Or just go and buy the filter removal tool from Toyota (about $30), a genuine filter and sump plug gasket from Toyota (about $20) an oil catch pan and 7L of your favourite flavour engine oil (check the book for minimum specifications and buy one that meets them) that's on special at local repco/autobarn/supercrap/etc.

Your first service will be about $150 as you need a filter tool and something to catch the oil (assuming you don't already have them) and the rest will be below $100. It really is piss easy to drop the oil in a Prado (and even easier if you have a lift as there is more than enough room to crawl under it without putting on stands).

Or spend another $30 and get a sumoto engine oil drain valve and it makes the whole job cleaner and quicker and easier
