  • Genuine Toyota bar fitted without bumper or interior trim removal.

Hi PP folk, just purchased my second new 150 in two years and needed to fit another tow bar ($650.00 towbar, harness and tongue and ball, all from dealer). Heard all the nightmares about all this removal of bumpers and rear seats to fit the bits. Stories of 9 hours to fit at home and the like sent shivers up my spine. Well I achieved a full genuine tow bar and harness installation without removing the bumper or seats in 3.5 hours at home. That's from opening the shed to washing my hands at the end. The only piece that needed to be removed was the grey plastic panel just behind the Rear right mudflap. This needed to be done to allow access to cut off the exhaust mount pins. I designed a template to use to mark out the bumper area to be cut and, well, it worked out perfectly. The polyair bags are next and already have my shed set up for the job. Going to time this as well. $250.00 delivered to my door from fleebay. If anyone is interested I have measurements of the template and photos of the steps. If not, happy travels. Cheers Rick.
Had a 2006 GXL, liked it so much bought a 2008 GXL. Liked the 150 so I bought a black 2010 GXL. Liked them even more and bought 12/2012 GXL. Must like Prado

    Drop Bear,

I'm trying to fit a genuine towbar harness but cannot figure out how to access the grommets that need to be removed to install the harness. I figured I would remove the LHS rear cargo trim and install a heavy duty cable from the dual battery at the same time. But to do this, following the instructions that came with the loom, I need to remove the trim along the bottom of the rear tailgate first, which is where I'm having trouble. Maybe I'm just being too gentle?

Anyhow, any tips on how you installed the loom would be much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    David.

Hi David, what are extra cables for? I have run twin 6mm cables down the drivers side under the vehicle and pushed them up through an existing grommet above the very last exhaust mount. I then placed a 12v socket below the 220v socket for running my fridge. I was lucky to have a 2010 GXL to work out the bugs first. This 2012 GXL is just refresher training. For the harness I will endeavour to get pics uploaded for you ASAP. It is really easy to do with helpful direction rather than the guide from Toyota. Wait out mate, I will get them for you if you want. Rick

Hi David, I installed the harness without removing the seats or any of the interior trim. Look just behind the rear LH wheel arch and you will see two grommets side by side on the vertical surface. They are about 50mm in diameter. Pull out the inboard grommet. Look through the hole and you will see another grommet just above it on the horizontal surface. Poke your fingers through and push that grommet up ( that one is right in the inner back corner of the jack compartment). Then just feed the harness through. Very simple and only takes about 10 minutes. The hardest part is finding the grommets in the first place.

            Drop Bear,

I got it apart in the end - was just the normal situation of not having pulled it apart before and not pulling hard enough! Loom is threaded - just have to get the grommets back in now, the lower one of which is looking quite hard as it's just above the chassis rail so hard to get access. Never mind uploading the pics on my behalf, but thanks all the same.

The extra cable was going to be for the fridge. I'm not sure which side to put it now. The LHS is already apart, and LHS seems better from a point of view of not having to open the door fully (though if there's a drawer on the other side it would have the same problem). I guess the drawer (if containing tools & recovery gear etc.) is likely to be used less frequently than the fridge though. The LHS panel looks to have less space for the plug though due to a sub woofer being there (don't really want to mount plugs in the jack access door), and the battery will be on RHS under bonnet making a longer cable run. The 240V outlet is already on RHS so it might be neater to keep all power on one side. Anyway, something for me to think about.

            Cheers,

            David.

              Slick1,
Thanks. As I posted above to Drop Bear, I got it apart in the end. Tonight's job will be getting that damn lower grommet back in properly (without losing too much more skin from the hands!) so I don't have a dust problem.

              Cheers,

              David.
