2014 Toyota Prado gets bold new look
By: IOL Motoring Staff
Toyota's Land Cruiser Prado is renowned for finding that delicate balance between on-road comfort and off-road prowess and the latest model simply adds some polish to that well-proven formula.
While its basic shape and rugged body-on-frame architecture are retained, the SUV gains a muscular new front end headlined by a huge vertically-stacked grille that's bound to command attention. It's flanked by higher-mounted headlights that flow into the grille like intimidating teeth. At the back, the eagle eyed will notice restyled taillights and wider licence plate panel.
The raft of interior changes includes a new upper centre console as well as fresh interior inlays, fabrics and colour schemes. Perched between the driver's instruments is a new Optitron metre with 4.2-inch colour display with animations that can show the vehicle's angle, diff lock operation and what the traction control is doing at each wheel.
Furthermore, a new switch panel gives drivers more intuitive control of the vehicle's off-road systems.
FIVE TERRAIN MODES
All five-speed automatic models come with Toyota's Multi-terrain Select gizmo with five terrain modes: Mud & Sand, Loose Rock, Mogul, Rock and Dirt & Rock.
Dial it in to match the terrain you're about tackle and it automatically modifies the throttle, braking and traction control systems to suit.
As before, the Prado has a permanent four-wheel drive system complete with a rear diff lock and a Crawl Control function that manipulates the engine and brakes to basically do the job of a low-range gearbox when the driver needs to crawl up or down a steep slope at walking pace.
To make life even easier, the Multi-terrain Monitor can display the view ahead on the vehicle's 7-inch central display screen. This system can also show the locations of obstacles detected by the clearance sonar.
To optimise comfort and road holding both on and off tar, engineers upgraded both the standard suspension system and the optional electronically modulated Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System.
BEEFED UP DIESEL
As before, buyers can choose between a 3-litre turbodiesel and 4-litre V6 petrol engine.
The diesel has been upgraded to make it Euro 5+ compliant and its outputs have increased to 140kW at 3400rpm and 420Nm from 1600rpm (up from 120kW/400Nm). Expect to see this engine in the next Hilux.
According to Toyota, the diesel Prado will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 11.0 seconds, reach a top speed of 175km/h and sip an average of 8.1 l/100km on the combined cycle.
The 3956cc V6 petrol model now pushes 207kW and 385Nm, gets to 100 in 10.9 seconds, reaches 180km/h and guzzles 10.8 l/100km.
Expect to see the new Prado in South Africa in November this year, fresh from making its first local appearance at the Johannesburg International Motor Show in October.

Shame they didn't give the Prado the same nose job as they did to the Hilux. I like the latest model Hilux in terms of looks.

DRLs I like but not when they are in the middle where they will be hidden by bar work. Cosmetic stuff doesn't affect me one way or another. Wonder when a Diesel engine upgrade is coming, not that I am in the market since I haven't finished this one. The rear seat area looks the same so I am guessing the improved access is a change to the second row seating.

Same clunker 3 litre D4D and gay looking led daytime running lights on either side of the grill ala Audi by the look of it. That should keep the KLC mob happy.

From the Toyota Australia website
http://www.toyota.com.au/news/toyota...dcruiser-prado
Toyota is poised to launch a facelift LandCruiser Prado range with improved safety features, better third-row seat access and higher interior and exterior specification.
The facelifted LandCruiser Prado is scheduled to have its Australian wholesale release in late October.
The new Prado has a refreshed exterior and interior, including daytime running lamps on all models.
Important safety upgrades across the range will include trailer sway control and emergency brake signal.
Trailer sway control gives LandCruiser Prado owners an additional layer of confidence and control when towing.
LandCruiser Prado's new face draws on several structural elements from its unique design heritage; a further evolution of the classic Prado grille and a vertical, two-step construction accentuating the new Toyota's rugged appearance.
A comprehensive interior upgrade combines new switchgear and instrumentation with enhanced trim and ornamentation, improved second and third row seat designs with new fabrics, and new interior colour schemes.
LandCruiser Prado debuted in Australia in 1990 and is now midway through its fourth generation.
It is offered with the choice of 4.0-litre petrol and 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engines.

I don't like how they have swapped the steering wheel over to the other side.

Confirmed Euro 5 diesel engine in that article, I wonder if it has also had a power increase.

Don't mind the new front. The interior is different, not sure if I like it or not will have to reserve that decision until I see the real thing.
What gets me though is if they are going to put the spare underneath, why then have they retained the stupid Barn door? I would have thought by far the better option would be a split opening door like the 200.

According to this article they may not retain the V6 petrol http://smh.drive.com.au/motor-news/t...826-2sky8.html

Dealers must loath the internet. How many potential customers will do a Prado search find this and haggle for a better price on the old model. As they say knowledge is power. Still keen to know how much of the fruit will be in a AU version and at what spec level.

Oh dear, from a distance from the rear it looks like a great wall SUV

Wow the DRLs are in a weird spot. Tricky to see once the bar is on. New bits are neither attractive or ugly to me, just different. Thanks for the link.
