  • Help to remove the steering rack

    Has any one had experience with removing the steering rack on a 150.
    To me it looks like the motor has to come out seems a little extreme but you can't get the bolts that attach the rack to the chasis out without at least jacking the motor up and that's before you try and remove the rack.
    Plus I heard Toyota book time was 12 hrs to change the rack which would add up to motor out.
    I have a manual on order but it seems to be taking its time
    Any help would be great

    Which engine do you have Brett (excuse my ignorance of your build)? I'm having a look on the CD at the steering gear removal for you, there's a few diagrams but they're engine specific for the most part.

            OOPS, missed your post. Here's some diagrams I dug out of the service manual.






            A couple of the diagrams were a bit too long to crop in one image so you'll have to print and join them up to get the full pic sorry.

              Note all the parts labelled in blue have hotlinks to specific removal instructions on the disc so if there's anything you need specifically let me know. Hope these help.

                Thanks again for the pics
                Jobs all done new rack and pump worked out you can get the rack out buy undoing the right engine mount and jacking the motor up enough to get the bolts and the rack out all done in 5 hours beat Toyota by 7hours and $4500

                    Why did yours need to come out? Did you bust something or did the lift create an issue?

                      Think I busted something inside the rack the end of the rack that holds the bearing in came undone and think bits got into the pump.
                      Tried for warranty but Toyota said I had a couple of holes in one rack boot so warranty void not impressed at 40,000km
