  • 80,000m Service - Where do I find what Toyota are "SUPPOSE" to DO for it?

    Gents.....

Our Prado is due for its 80k service and I was wondering is people could tell me what Toyota ARE SUPPOSE TO DO for this service as its a major overnight service.

I read its when they check valve clearances, etc, but what I want to know is how is this suppose to be done? A Noise/sound check or are they physically suppose to remove the injectors as well to replace the injector seals & what ever else they are suppose to replace?

Where could I find this written down that I could print it out to give it to the service people to ensure that everything is done according to what Toyota HQ advises??

    cheers....

They are supposed to provide cold start injector readings. When they dump the engine oil, they should also check the sump pickup screen to see if it is clogged.

Andrew, is this written down anywhere?

The injectors are my main concern. I would like to make sure that they are ALL OK.

        Hello Rob Macca,

The info you need is in your Toyota, "Warranty & Service" book (in the fine print).

It states on page 2 of my "Warranty & Service Book", under footnote "2" that:

Valve Clearance (Diesel Models). Check valve clearance using a thickness gauge and adjust if necessary (adjustment requires additional time).

Furthermore, towards the rear of the "Warranty & Service" book, it outlines "Additional Service Requirements".

If you drive in extreme conditions or harsh environments, such as rough, muddy or snow melted roads, or dusty roads, or tow, or use a car top carrier, or have repeated short trips or extensive idling or low speed driving, or stop start city driving or suburban driving, or continuous high speed driving, then there are additional service requirments.....so thats just about every Prado in Australia

so...as per the service schedule towards the rear of the "Warranty and Service" book, that means...

Change engine oil and filter at 5,000km intervals, and change auto transmission fluid at 80,000km (and also the transfer case oil. )

I don't belive for one second that the auto transmission is "sealed for life"...as its definately not sealed, it simply doesn't have a dip stick on the auto, but it has a drain plug, a fill plug and the fluid definately needs to be changed, especially if you do any sort of driving under "harsh conditions". The Warrany & Servcice book indicates "automatic transmission fluid" inspection every 40,000km. Thats not just an inspection to see if its full, its also about inspecting the quality of the auto fluid...so have them inspect it, and it will almost certainly be very discoloured or even burnt, and the auto will almost certainly be smoother after changing it....but that will be an extra service item under the Fixed Price servicing also.

It also says "Time for valve clearance inspection is included at the appropriate servcies, however additional time will be requird if adjustment is needed."

However, I was told that a toyota service bulletin was issued that indicated that valve clearance inspection on the diesel was only done "audibly" (ie by "listening" for noises from under the tappet cover). Some experienced mechanics believe that is quite simply a joke, as it can only be done with a feeler guage.
At this stage he is not on this forum anymore as far as I know, but the Roo (##########) knows about this stuff in some significant detail. PM me if you want his contact number to discuss further.

Have a safe and happy Christmas.

Interesting. The time quoted for the service with the valve clearance check is based on using the feeler gauge to do the check. If they only do an "audible check" do they remove the time required for the feeler gauge check from the bill? I suspect the time would be an hour or so.

          Cheers

They only need to do what's written in your service & maintenance schedule.
Generally audible is what they do for valve adjustment, unless its written otherwise, but then you would have to care to read it.

              Basically pay more, do less.
R they concerned about checking your oil pickup? Not likely.

Do they really need it overnight? Mine is at 78500 so I'll be hitting 80k next week. Dunno how I'm going to leave it there. What did they quote you?

                  Folks

Mine is a v6 and had the 80000 k service last week, $1172.00 with the only extra being a wheel alignment and wash.

                    Hi Guys
                    A timely thread, mine goes in for its 80k service tomorrow, will request the following;
                    * Provide cold start injector readings.
                    * Valve clearance check to be done with thickness gauges not audibly (Brogers - refer foot note 2 in service/warranty booklet).
                    * Check sump pick up screen.

                    Any other recommendations?

                        Well Richo,

My petrol model is due for it's 80,000 service in March, 2014, with an extended warranty of another 3 years at Windsor Toyota in western Sydney.

Service price will be $249-, but I wonder what will really be done for the price?

Yowie, the last service Windsor Toyota did for me last July (48 mths) for the fixed $249 was very basic. At first they wouldn't even stamp the book because it was a fixed price and not everything was replaced by the book (except the oil) just inspected until I insisted so talk to them before the service. Torque Toyota here in North Lakes quoted me $850 for my 80 000km service next month.

                            Cheers Jim.
