Drove my new one home and parked it for a couple of weeks, next time I tried to drive it I found rats had chewed the wiring above and in front of the rear tank. Warning lights on everywhere. I've had the rats in the filter area as well.
REPCO has the ryco one for about $30.00, the Toyota one was about $75 I think.

Ryco filter from Repco cost me $23 yesterday.
Know all about mice used to take dog biscuits under bonnet of stretch limo piss and crap everywhere, bought 3 electronic rodent repellers from Bunning's no more mice.

I got a repo branded charcoal filter yesterday for $23.

I have discovered that it is quite easy for a rat to get into the A/C air intake and if the recirculate is turned to fresh air then it can basically sit on top of the filter. If you remove the black plastic shroud at the base of the windscreen that surrounds the wipers it reveals an opening of about 200mm x 60mm that is the fresh air intake. I realised I had a pack of musli bars in the glove box that may have been attracting them, removed that quickly.

I am slowly poisoning the rats but they have been in there four nights in a row.

Lock about a dozen cats in your car for a week or so, that should get rid of the rats.

Am thinking I might have to pull my filter out and check it after reading all this:?

Rats will actually stay away from the smell of cat piss. Get a cat to piss in and around your car and you'll be fine.

Rats have been in my Prado. No idea as to how or where the buggers got in.
                    Meguiars Odour Neutraliser. Recommended.
Remove filter, turn fan on full bore and spray directly in to the aperture wher filter came from.
Apply liberally to the cleaned a/c filter before replacing (or put in a new filter).
Also spray liberally through the car after a good vacuum and clean.
Much better than those smelly pine trees to hang off the mirror which seem only to overpower the bad smell with a sickly sweet smell.

100% take the advice to get rid of the rat ASAP. A French rat ate my wife's VW Golf (well at least I think it was French, because the damn thing was catching snails, cooking and eating them on top of the engine block - snail shells and rat droppings everywhere). Then for dessert, would help itself to anything resembling a wire. $5500 in labour alone to fix the mess, and the car was never the same. For some reason, the rat left my Prado alone though

I ended up cable tying Ratsack satchels under the bonnet - the rat helped itself to a few packets before finally disappearing forever. I now keep a satchel in every engine bay - a quick and easy way of knowing if another rat has visited the engine!

Well touch wood I think I have knocked off the rats. They have chewed their way through four full wax blocks and two half more with no activity for the past couple of nights. Ill leave a couple of baits out full time just in case but have to be careful as I do have a dog.

Reading the posts on here has scared the hell out of me with the damage they can do and it looks like I got off lightly. I did buy another filter from repco while on special as a back up just in case.

Those wax blocks work well! I used them to stop them eating my jumbo pumpkin. Took 4 nights of them eating a block or two a night before they died. Havn't seen one since.

I agree. I've just recently declared war on some rats that were getting so bold they would come out in the evening to pinch biscuits out of the dogs bowl even when I was standing close by. I suspect they were only young. Four days of baiting them and apart from a few green droppings I noticed, I haven't seen one since.

A high profile insolvency practitioner in SA took on Qantas. His claim was that rats/mice ate his wiring loom in his Aston Martin while parked in their care.

When we were demolishing our old shed I found a stack of snail shells and orange rinds. Wouldn't mind so much if they cleaned up after themselves and ate some weeds in the process to achieve a balanced diet......
