  • Upgrade to 150 VX - Extra Mechanical Warranty?

I have taken the plunge to upgrade from my 120 2006 GXL to a 2013 150 VX.

Dynamic blue, diesel, 2013 August build, bulbar, 2500kms, with the new face lift and upgrades, dealer demo, $70K.

I was looking at the GXL but for the price and inclusions it seemed to good of a deal with the bulbar and KDSS to pass up. Take off my trade in, its the around the same to upgrade to the GXL.

The dealership also includes a further 3year / up to 200,000k mechanical warranty, the catch - must be serviced with them (after the Toyota warranty expires) for capped $329.00 servicing every 6mth/10k. The $329 includes replacement oils and filters. It is the same as the Toyota service.

Not being a mechanic here is what the mechanical plan covers - I would appreciate any feed back, I do note that they do not have to use genuine Toyota parts. There is no restrictions on the amount of claims, but each claim can not be more than $2k.

I have read through the policy wording, its very clear and straight forward there is no "fine print".

The Premium Mechanical Protection Plan covers your vehicle against:

Why didn't u just get the Toyota extended warranty? The genuine extended warranty is 3yrs 150k. Although they might not have given you the called price servicing, Sounds like a nice rig tho

The question is: who is the insurance with? Toyota use an after market company for extended warranty. My extended warranty, when I bought the 120 in January 2009, cost $1800 for 3 years (Swann). The capped price servicing finished at the 3 year mark and servicing since then has been at normal dealer pricing. You say the maximum claim is $2000. My engine rebuild was almost $12,000. My warranty covered all that less a new fuel filter and main battery. Yours says it doesn't cover engine block. My rebuild was based on a new short motor. Repairing the original motor with new barrels, etc was estimated to cost almost double so the insurance company agreed to go with the new short block. Hopefully, you'll never need a new motor. But it only takes one faulty injector to bring it all apart. They're going to charge you $329 every 6 months or 10k. If that includes the big services that normally cost a bomb, you should be alright. You'll still be up for "worn" parts - belts, pads, coolant, wiper blades, batteries, etc.

I wasn't offered the Toyota extended warranty (even though it is a Toyota dealership). I think that is only if your finance through Toyota, that the Toyota Extended Warranty is offered. I'm not financing with them.

Its basically to attempt to keep your car being serviced at that dealership for as long as possible.

I intend on keeping the VX for a few kms. I wasn't going to trade up for a while yet, but with the price of a VX basically the same for a GXL at todays $$ would be silly not to. It looks a treat..

I just jumped onto Toyota. It says it's up to the dealer to offer this extended warranty (extra care warranty) wow! It says it's not for sale........... Weird. Considering I paid $1450 for it. It is run by Toyota finance but it looks like Toyota finance isn't one of the requirement, I could be wrong. This is by far the best value for money extended warranty if you could get it, because it literally just extends your genuine warranty. And by Christ I've made very good use of this... last one before mine finishes is getting my two rear seatbelts replaced under it.

Its with the actual dealership they are in every state and have a large number of dealerships. Although there might will be an underwriter, I will have to look further as that is not mentioned anywhere.

The capped servicing they are offering at $329.00 starts after/ when the Toyota capped serving ceases. Although I must have the Toyota capped servicing completed at their dealership.

There is no cost to me for the Extended Mechanical Warranty, it is was part of the deal they included, they were desperate to make the sale, I was surprised at the changeover figure and had to keep my poker face!

I'm not mechanical, hence why the query to PP members if is it worth it? If I was to go through your scenario then I would be in trouble with the claim limit set to $2k, now matter the unlimited claim amount. I have to decide to either use this dealer with the extended warranty or another (there are a few around me) without it and except what happens after the Toyota normal warranty runs out.

ATM it makes sense to me to run with it, and with other peoples experiences it may change my mind.

I can only go off my experience and what I read here on PP. Not being a diesel owner before I have no idea what can go wrong other than I read from here. In saying that I have had my 2006 Petrol V6 6sp Man GXL from new and have never had an issue and now 175000k she still runs like a dream. It will be sad to see her go.

From what I read here, if I change oils/filters, regular service's and with Toyotas quality it should be trouble free.

It does not cover major services, it is very specific:

Total price including parts, oil & labour is shown on your Customer Contract page - $329.00
            • Oil change including motor oil
            • Replace oil filter
            • Carry out minor engine tune
            • Check condition of automatic transmission fluid (where applicable)
            • Lube all doors and locks as required
            • Check and top up all fluid levels including battery, brake, power steering, radiator and windscreen washers
            • Inspect engine belts (external only)
            • Inspect condition and pressure of all tyres, including spare
            • Inspect cooling system and check glycol concentrate
            • Inspect complete exhaust system
            • Check front and rear brake material and rotors for excessive wear
            • Check operation of hand brake
            • Test engine management system (if applicable)
            • Check condition of air filter
            • Check operation of all lights
            • Check operation of all instruments
            • Test wipers and inspect wiper blades
            • Check air conditioning operation (where fitted)
            • Check steering and all suspension components
            • Complete visual inspection of under carriage
            • Conduct road test

Your Vehicle will require additional periodical maintenance on specific items from time to time.
These will be at additional cost to you. For example, automatic transmission servicing, timing
belt replacement, spark plugs, brake fluid or engine coolant replacement will be required at
            the manufacturer’s recommended intervals.

            cheers for your feedback,

Thanks for the link. I will call Toyota tomz to sus it out some more. From the quick read it seems much better coverage even if there was a cost!
