  • 150 4WD use

    Well I feel like a bit of a dill, but here goes

    I recently upgraded from a 90 series to a 150 series - and can't see how to actually engage 4WD. The 90 series simply had the second gear stick, and away you went. The 150 series has a H4 to L4 dial, which I follow - but how do you actually engage H4?

    So how do I change from normal constant 4wd mode for normal road use, to high range 4wd for sand etc. The user manual doesn't seem to reference this, and I haven't been able to find anything elsewhere that helps

    Its full time 4wd so no 2wd mode all. For everyday use you are in 4wd mode, which also works fine for sand. So the only time to shift the transfer case is to switch to low range.

    Edit: Depending on which specific 150 series you have there may be various electronic assists that go along with the 4wd system too like traction control. Also you likely have a centre diff lock that you may want to engage (button near the dial with an x in the middle of the picture of the car). For sand driving you may want to activate that so your front and rear axles get equal power. Do remember to disable this for normal pavement driving or you risk transmission / drivetrain damage.

    There should be a specific manual for the 4wd system in amongst the service book and normal manual. Well worth a read.

        All I do in mine is switch to L4 when required, center diff lock and off I go.. It's that easy. Traction control is great... Way better than open diffs.

          For sand use all you need to do is press the centre diff lock switch and away you go.

            To specifically answer your question the difference between road mode and high range four wheel drive is the Centre Diff Lock to the left of the High/Low range dial. On, it brings up the lock light on the dash and quickly binds up the drive line so you will be able to hear the difference as well. When locked it is the same configuration as the 90 in 4WD high, only with the addition of traction control.

                When I bought my 120 new, the dealer enquired if I wanted to know what all the controls were and where they were located. Having owned the 98 model from new I thought I was a bit of an expert and declined his offer. As a bit of a curious type, I soon worked everything out as it's all pretty obvious. Bit like a digital watch. There's only so many combinations of pushing the buttons until you figure out what does what. The 150 and 200 series have a lot of stuff sufficiently concealed to the point you need the reference manual to help you out.

                  All the above is right though on sand I recommend you push and hold the traction control button to switch traction control and stability control off. The beauty with this setup is you can select low range without locking the centre differential. Very handy if you are reversing a trailer up steep hard ground.

                    WOW.... I didn't realise this one.... I had always thought that once u selected L4 it automatically engage the Centre Diff-lock......

                      I actually notice on mine (Kakadu) the traction control is turned off at the time of selecting L4. Maybe I have it wrong but it does say track off when in L4. To me this seems like a bit of a trap because with effectively all 3 diffs being open, you could find that one wheel breaking traction stops you from moving forward. You then need to either turn on the multi-terrain mode which turns on the active traction control mode, use crawl or lock the diffs.

                        I actually did a half day off road bush trip in low range with no diff lock (accidentally), traction control just kicked in and took over.

                          [IMG][/IMG]the centre diff lock is the button to the left of the dial which is a picture of the centre diff lock. What I have noticed is depending on year model to where the DAC control switch is place some on the left some on the right but centre diff lock button is on the left..... Cheers Steve

                            Only the front and rear diffs are "open". The centre diff is a Torsen type LSD. Possibly a reason why low range does not automatically lock the diff as the torque is (nearly) always spread between the two axles. The Torsen style of LSD gets its limiting action from clever use of gears, it does not use clutch packs, brakes or dog clutches. Google "Torsen" for more info.

                            For most use it seems to work OK unlocked, but if the going gets really tough it is probably best to lock it. Then the locking mechanism takes the torque load rather than the diff gear teeth.

                              Driven in sand numerous times, and never touched a thing (except the tyre pressures). No need to press the centre diff lock button in my humble opinion.
