Please bear with me if this seems like a basic question but I don't know who else to ask. Here goes... The 150 (diesel engine) has 2 tanks but only one fuel gauge. I'm guessing when the vehicle is filled the fuel goes into the "reserve" tank first then into the main tank. I'm guessing the fuel is used up first from the "reserve" tank. So my question is: Does the fuel gauge only show movement of the needle once the fuel is starting to be used from the main tank hence I can drive for a couple of hundred km with the needle showing full.

From the filler the fuel splits into a Y piece but the rear tank looks like it fills first as it's inlet from the Y piece is lower than the front tank . When the engine is running fuel is drawn through both tanks .
The gauge is different from the 120 model as it doesn't have the changeover as 1 tank is emptied .

So I have been driving for 5 days now since I filled up. Only short trips in city conditions, however the needle is still showing full. I'm guessing when I use the 63 litres from the sub tank (as I found out its called in the book) then the gauge will start to show some something other than full.

NR, my needle does take about 100km or so to move, it will move long before you empty the sub tank.

Fuel Remaining on Empty
On a sort of related matter, how many litres of fuel is left once the gauge indicates empty?
I've never been able to put in 150ltrs although I've run it down as much as possible and actually ran out once!! (Not good!)
So as best as I can calculate, there's somewhere between 15-20ltrs. Anyone got a more technical/qualified answer?

You probably won't pick up the last few litres if it gets that low, also there may be some sort of sediment in the bottom of the tank that you do not want to pick up and block the system with (some of the fuel stations have sediment in their tanks, and it can be transferred to your fuel tank)
My brother told me the pickup for the fuel sender unit sits just off the bottom for that reason.
I am not worried about fuel consumption any more, fill up when the tank is near empty and/or the fuel is near it's cheapest part of the price cycle.

Yup I do the same essentially (just fill up and enjoy), but in planning for our looong trip to the North West (Melb, Albany, Perth, Bungle Bungles, Darwin, Alice, home...), I'd like to know that I can make it between stations, etc. Obviously not a good idea to get down to the smelly rag stage!! I have a pre-filter installed so less worried about particulates and water, etc.
