  • VSC Activating between Reverse and Drive

Ok, so if I park on a hill, say facing up hill, and reverse down the hill, then before stopping I select neutral then drive, and while still rolling backwards just the tiniest bit, the VSC goes bananas! It only stops when I brake to a complete stop, or drive off forward.

Has anyone else seen this, I have done it a dozen times when reversing out of a carpark and going from R to D and driving off, the VSC flashes the light, beeps and the pump pulsates the brake pedal and I'm not even moving! Well, slightly rolling backwards but not fast enough to even rotate a tyre half a rotation.

Can someone else try this in their 150 to see if its normal?

It's normal, part of the we won't let the car runaway downhill like a drunk cat pack.

Surely it's not the Hill Start Assist?

That's gay, so rolling backwards in drive = noisy flashy lights on the dash? Right... And my Subaru does the same thing mechanically without a fuss or noise.

Pretty much. Better than no HAC at all.

If it bothers you, try left foot brake and right foot accelerate next time, if some brake is applied HAC doesn't work.

So what does it try to do, limit wheel spin (which is TRC job) or stop you rolling backwards? The user manual is useless on the matter.

It stops you from rolling backwards.
It knows you are in drive and should be moving forwards, any more than a slight backward roll and HAC will activate.

There are a few Youtube clips with more info if you do a quick search.

Fair enough, very elaborate system, the Subaru one is better. In the outback the electric park brake automatically engages and disengages when you stop on a hill and drive off. No lights, no noise, no fuss. The old Subaru system in the manuals was linked to the clutch and just worked using mechanical hydraulics.

Yes the electric handbrake in the Prado is quite poor.
