I have a gme with all the controls on the mic. The unit is mounted under the center console. The only thing I can see is the mic socket, which is mounted in one of the blank switch spots near the hi/lo dial. The socket looks like an Ethernet socket. While the mic is in the glovebox when not in use you would never know the unit is installed. A mate wanted to plug his bloody mac into the socket- he thought I had internet!
Have Icom 440N, which has controls in head. This weekend mounted inside centre console. Lifted centre console (see somewhere else on forum, quite easy) and mounted on forward face of centre console main bin. Front section of this bin is part of centre console and forma a hollow when together. Scraped off foam sound deadener, in fact got my sander out to clean as best as I could. Mounted main unit here with double sided tape to hold it as was recommended to me by specialist. Supplemented this with several solid strips of silicone which I am using behind everything I am fitting in my build, eg dual battery control, under bonnet switches etc.
Ran the power/aerial/mike head extension cable foward, all nicely bound and wrapped to exit up front in LH footwell to then deal with as you want.
I am wiring radio to aux battery which is located where original crank battery was on LHS thanks to excellent ABR dual battery kit (highly recommended). This means it stays on whilst in camp etc. Not sure yet where I will put head unit but this can be simply unplugged from the extension cable when not in use.
Good luck with your choice.
I have a little GME with all the controls on the mike. The unit is cable tied to the steel pipe behind the dash with the mike cable coming out under the center console. Been like that nearly four years and no issues. No holes or mods required to the vehicle.

I mounted my ICOM 440n under the passenger seat on top of the GPS DVD. Just fits there without hitting the seat.

Under the dash on top of the plastic panel underneath the glovebox, just need to cut away a small section of the sound matting to make room.
Pic shows the UHF module mounted to the panel with double sided tape, no drilling or holes required. LHS kick panel was removed to make room for the UHF cable and power leads which come through the firewall on that side.
I have a UNIDEN UH7760NB with the controls on the mic. I put it under the dash I screwed the mounting bracket into what I believe was the clutch pedal mount ( a single screw) under the dash. I then screwed the unit into the mounting bracket. It was a bit of a fiddle to get it all done as most of it was done by feel. But it is out of the way and leaves you with plenty of options of where to run the mic connector to.

Currently the mic feeds out a groove I created under the console lid. This is about to change when I receive an extension cord and utilise one of the blanks near the 12v/USB/Aux. http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post452007
Antenna is installed on my Bullbar. Its getting replaced very soon. New antenna is sitting at home waiting for a free weekend!!

I have a UNIDEN UH7760NB also - fitted to my 120 GXL. Had it fitted professional and the chap that did it also has the same unit. He put the main unit in and out of sight under the central console behind the gear lever. Took power from the wires running to the ciggy lighter. Neat installation. Only gear visible is the handset.

I have the Icom 440N, main unit mounted behind the left kick panel for the front passenger. Lead then runs to the side of the drivers footwell where it attaches to the carpet via some Velco. When I use it I just plug in the handset and chuck the handset into one of the cup holders. Works really well. I have an install guide in my buildup.
Got a gme with the controls on the mic. Main unit is located under drivers seat with cable running within the centre console and has the mic connector/joiner plastic welded into a spare switch socket. Simply plug mic in when I want to use it and remove when I don't.
