  • Setting up my new 150 for The Kimberleys

Im just new to using this site. So bare with me. People proably have discussed this tgread already.

Im planning on heading to the Kimberleys from Darwin and back.
I brought a new 150 series a couple weeks back.
I have installed an ARB Deluxe winch bullbar and BFG AT 285/70/17
So now im looking for advice to see what I really need to add on to my 150 for a safe trip.

    Any help would be great

    Paulie

When I went to the Kimberly in my 120 the only mods I had were BFG AT tyres and a snorkel. Better suspension would have been nice but it handled everything without any issues.

    Cheers Andrew

Have a look through the trip reports and read up on the rig builds that have done that and similar trips.

          Hi Paulie,

Out of curiosity, are you running factory 17" Prado Rims with the 285/70/17s?

I would definitely look at suspension especially if you are loading up the back.
Tyre pressure monitor for any touring if you have the $$$. To go with a tyre pressure gauge and air compressor. I presume you have some recovery gear, if you are travelling alone, doesn't hurt to have a set of Maxtrax.
A snorkel would help getting some cleaner air on the tracks.
Then anything else to make your trip easier as in storage, fridges, drawers etc.

Depends on your route, passengers and comfort requirements. Wife & I did Perth->Broome->Gibb River Road->Bungle Bungles->Kakadu 8 years ago in a 60 series with 350,000km on the clock, bullbar and new tires (Pirelli Scorpions A/T). No other mods apart from a rear power socket and a cheap arse travel cooler/fridge from Target. I had two spare tires and never needed them. (They were the best pair of my old tires). Checker plate side steps saved us from panel damage when a backpacker van spooked a roo and it ran into the side of the car. Slept in the back on a mattress from a caravan. Basic cooking gear and a dual gas burner, 50 litres of water. Basic toolkit and spares (belts, filters, engine oil, jerry can of diesel-never used), recovery kit and shovel

We didn't do Cape Leveque but rest was all on well travelled roads in tourist season so wasn't too concerned about breakdowns and mishaps. Further off the beaten track I would have carried more. Would I do the same now with 3 kids in tow? Probably not

The mods are endless mate but you have started with the two essentials already, we'll done. The car is a tourer and depending on where you go etc will really depend on what you want to do to it. I lived in the Kimberley when I bought my 120 new, I did tunnel creek to the bungle bungles, the gibb, Mitchell falls etc all on standard suspension and tyres etc, never had a hassle and no punctures.
I then did the gibb again to Darwin etc with a 2 inch lift and muddies etc a year later and again no dramas. Both times I towed camper trailers and no punctures etc.
I lived in the Kimberley at the time and up at cape leveque.

In my current 150 I have I'd decked out a lot better but it just depends what you want to do and the $$ you want to spend.

                Goodluck mate, gods country !!

UHF... gotta have a radio. And snorkel.

I fitted old man emu suspension up to mine fairly early and it has made a huge difference. Roof rack is handy for a bit more space. And I would be looking into some sidesteps if you have the gx.

                      Thanks for the help everyone.
In the mean time. I have added 2" OME and a 3/4 tourer roof rack.
                      So slowly getting there.
                      Here's another question.
I don't have a big family and I'm looking or thinking about ripping out the back row of seats.
Has anyone done this for extra space or is it worth while.

I bought a bigger fridge (60 litre) to compliment the 40 litre.

Removing the rear seats is common enough, have a search around and you will a few ideas no what people have done.
