new 2013 prado vx 150 diesel gear box issues

I am a new member, hope someone can help me.
When going down hill my prado is droping down a gear and giving me back pressure breaking when I dont want it to, it is very unerving when you are not breaking and the engine is reving its head off, I have been putting the gearbox into manual and selecting fifth gear to drop it up to fifth and stop the reving, any help would be appreciated.

The gearbox is doing what it is designed to do. It will only drop a gear if you are braking and there is no throttle applied.

In the 120 a quick flick down to 4th and back to 5th solves the problem.

Yep, unnerved me at first when I stepped out of the 120 into the 150.... but this is normal and you will get used to it.

I love it and wish more cars had it, because that is what you do in a manual to prevent brake wear.

Try a little light throttle application, just enough to let it know you do not need help slowing down.

I noticed the same issue on my 2012 GXL, only happens to me when the cruise control is turned ON (not necessarily set to cruise speed).
See if it does the same with it OFF

Chris the 120's do it also. I find if you just hold your foot on the brake it won't do it, but dab the pedal and mine will drop down a gear and some times two depending on the steepness of the hill and how quick I dab the brake......... Cheers Steve

Chris it is the same in my VX, freaked me out in the first week of driving, there are a few hills around my patch. It is normal, it is also mentioned in the manual.

It does it all the time, any grade downhill with brake is a one or two gear change down, works flawlessly. Also works with cruise on when coasting down a steep hill to hold the correct speed.

It also holds low gears up steep hills with throttle on or off to prevent hunting.

Must be different to the 120 with cruise on, as with 120 will only kick back when you touch the brake pedal BUT when you do this with the 120 it automatically cancels the cruise out so if the hill is steep enough it will run away on you still.......So are you saying that with out even touching the brake pedal on the 150's it will kick back itself downhill ?? ......Cheers Steve

Correct, did it just on the weekend coming down Mt Tamborine, cruise on 90 and down some hilly sections the car ran over to 100 and kicked back to third and slowed down to 90 and shifted back to 4th till the flat and the shifted back fifth.

Not surprised. Must be a Toyota thing now. The new corollas do this too. They rev quite high down hills in cruise.

My 2010 outback does as well but it's a CVT so it just slides the ratio back a bit and the engine breaking smoothly intervenes. You can't really hear it though.

Thanks for the reply, i did notice in one reply that this only happens when brakes are applied and throttle off, my prado does the shifting with no brake applied and throttle off if you are coasting downhill.
