  • Budget off-road camper trailer for Prsdo 150

    Hi all,

I realise similar threads exist to this, however I am looking for help with the following:

My wife and I are looking to purchase a camper trailer for under 10K which has the following options/specifications.
    1. Extended drawbar for the camper so we fully open our Prado rear door (we have a drop slide fridge on the rear left which we would like to access when the trailer is connected)
    2. Same size tyres as the our Prado (265)
    3. We are thinking about independent suspension, what is everyone's opinion in this?

We are planning to use the camper for basic off-road adventures, based out of Cairns. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Options 2 & 3 are not really necessities in my opinion.

Good quality Heavy Duty eye to eye leaf springs are as good as independent suspension IMHO.

Also, if you have to spend money to change tyres / wheels to suit the Prado, I could think of plenty of better things to spend that money on.

      Gooday,
IMHO 1 is not a necessary, if you jackknife your trailer when you park up you will still be able to open the door, if you go too long it can cause issues with touching the ground over small edges.

Check out Caravan Camping sales. They had a second hand Conqueror Uev-310 for $14k+, and a all-roada Kwik Kampa 2 for $12k+.
Originally I wanted to buy an off road camper trailer, I will be purchasing the Oztent RV5 which will connect to the Foxwing Awning after I solve my dilemma on which bar I should purchase.

Hit myswag dot org there's a few on there at present. I'm currently looking at the Leisure Matters xtrack. I must say after looking at many campers I was actually surprised to find that it was imported trailer until I asked how much. The independant suspension seems very solid similar in design to vehicle components and very different to a lot of other imported independant set ups that look very much underdone. Having another close look tomorrow with wife in tow.

I am leading towards it and for 8k it's seems good value. The formentioned forum site gives you some interesting reviews and also you can get a good gauge as to the suppliers after sales service too.

I have a spare rim that I'm taking with me tomorrow to see if it will fit with the 25mm offset, wider tyres and larger diameter.
For me having a couple of spares for those long remote trips being able to interchange between camper and tow vehicle is appealing.

          Good luck with your search.
