  • Towing capacity

Can I legally increase the towing capacity of my 2012 Kakadu? I want to tow a 3000 kg gm caravan. Will chipping and 3" exhaust do it?
    What determains the towing capacity?

I thought it has something to do with the Towbar?

Sorry Loubaga, but you can't increase towing capacity by modifying engine/drive components.

The manufacturer specifies the vehicle's towing capacity based on a number of factors related to the design of the vehicle, the strength of various components such as the rear axle, the impact of a heavy trailer on a vehicle's stability, the capabilities of its brakes etc.

The manufacturer will usually specify the maximum weight of a trailer with and without brakes and also the maximum tow ball load (how much weight the trailer puts on the tow ball vertically).

The towbar should be rated at least as high at the vehicle towing capacity - so the vehicle is the limiting factor.

This is where the 5 door Prado has been left behind. Many others in the segment, and lots of the ute 4wd variants have a 3T towing capacity. I am currently looking to buy a boat, and getting something 25-30ft trailerable is just not feasible with the Prado.

I emailed toyota about this a while ago, I mentioned that overseas the 5 door Prado has a 3 t towing capacity, and asked what could be done here in OZ. I also pointed out that the 3 door has a 3t towing capacity. The reply mentioned that I would have to find an engineer that would approve appropriate mods and then sign off raising the towing capacity. I contacted a few engineers and they basically mentioned that it cannot be done unless Toyota tells us what needs to be modified or improved otherwise increasing towing capacity cannot be done. Toyota seem unable to provide that bit of information.

I tow a van that is 2500atm, but could increase this to 2650kg so was keen to do this.

At a guess , we are classed as a hot climate, and with the extra long range fuel tank and its weight, that is not fitted to the overseas Prado`s they have decided to limit it to 2500kg. It would be nice if they had limited it to 2750kg to allow for the extra weight of the long fuel tank.

Anyway, I have been up over the dividing range a couple of times up to Qld and then over to WA in the last two years and am happy enough with the Prado towing 2500kg, in particular with WDH and the dobinson springs, Bilsteins and tyres with stiffer sidewalls. Realistically the standard suspension is underdone for towing 2500kg, let alone 3000kg.
I don`t have an additional auto transmission cooler, always tow in 4th in "S" and drive with a bit of mechanical sympathy, basically revs are your friend.

Do I thing the Prado is capable of towing 3t? yes, but not with oem suspension and tyres.

Anyway I fixed the Problem I bought he Prado`s bigger brother and should get it in the next coupe of weeks.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

I think it has to do with the towball weight. With the regulations requiring 10% towball weight, increasing the towing capacity will require a 300kg towball weight. If you remove the 2nd fuel tank, you'll get the extra 50kg required which would align with the overseas model that have the spare under the boot and our 3 door models. Now if an engineer and Toyota can work together towards this, then you might get the 3T towing capacity.

Not every manufacturer uses the 10% towball weight. A colleague was looking for a non 4wd to tow his little pop top and a number of the euros don't use 10% but something considerably less.

Spoke to a bloke on a recent caravan trip to northern NSW. He said his son is a senior salesman with a Toyota dealer in Qld, and Toyota Aust. is keeping the Prado at 2,500 kg (even though Toyota N.Z. has the same vehicle at 3,000kg) so that more 200's are sold in Aust. A better profit margin for Toyota (both he and his son own 200's, at the good discount price through the son)

Thanks all, I am wiser, but not wise enough when I bought the Prado. My quest is to find an engineer to help bring it up to 3000kg.

Good luck, that can't be done in Qld.
