  • Towing 1300kg with v6 prado

    Hi all,
    I currently tow a 800kg camper trailer with my 09 v6 gxl.
The car tows or ok, but obviously eats the fuel accordingly at around 18-19 L per 100kms.
Any experienced towers out there pulling around 1300kg with the v6, and if so how does it effect fuel and drive.
I have not towed anything heavier but looking to buy a new camper which is around 1300kg.

    Thanks in advance.

I'll admit im D4D biased but I think that consumption is high for the weight.

A friend has a V8 petrol LC100 and New Patrol and both rigs manage in the 16-17 range (on the highway) with around that sort of weight.

A long way from a scientific answer I know. What speed do you travel at?
      Cheers

I usually travel at the indicated speed limit of course...!
I'm not really one to travel at 90 in a 100 zone.
I usually use the cheapest fuel available which is usually the e10 stuff, which can decrease power and economy, but the cost can be 20 cents a litre cheaper than regular unleaded, but would prefer to use premium at the right price.
My concern is going to places like Fraser Island with a heavier camper, and towing long distances in general.

My v6 prado has about 1500lbs of constant added weight to the vehicle and i get around 24L/100km on city driving...before the armoring i would get around 20L/100km...so it definitely affects fuel consumption.

We have a 2010 V6 and towing our Jayco Expanda which weighs in at just under 2000kg when loaded we return about 21L/100km. I have a 2013 Ford Ranger as well and for the same van and weight we get 13.5L/100km.

I am presently towing close to 2500 kg with my V6 Prado and I am on a trip around oz with the family. Presently after 2500km my computer is telling me 19.6 litres per 100 which is supported by the spreadsheet I am using. This however does include some around town km,s and some beach driving. Straight towing average is about 20.5. Follow me on the below blog site and I will keep updated figures. Interestingly my uncle has a 200 series diesel Sahara at present we are using the same amount of fuel but his van is about 350kg's heavier.

Interesting question about stuff on the roof. On mine I reckon that a roof basket and a spare wheel on top costs 2-3 l/100 km at 100kph.

Very true. My brother averaged mid 16's coming to QLD with a roofrack. I usually am around 12's without.

What is also significant is whether you are driving into a head wind or not.

I had quite a few crates on the roof of ours and drove into a head wind on our recent trip. That got me 17L/100km on the trip computer.
Coming back with a tail wind, it dropped to 14.1L/100km.

Basically aerodynamics plays a big part in fuel consumption. Lifting a 4WD also alters the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
