  • Coolant Change for Alpine Travel

    Hi all,

I'm planning to take the prado to the ski fields in a few weeks (for a week) and was wondering whether there is any need to change the coolant over to something suited to the sub-zero conditions?

If running the genuine pink coolant, it is fine, if not, we would need to know what coolant you are running.

It's what ever comes with the car from factory and/or changed by the dealer.

Should be genuine pink coolant then, it'll be fine. Make sure, if your prado is a diesel, that you plan to need fuel in an alpine area to fill up with alpine blended diesel. I try and work it to have minimal fuel in cooma, fill up there with diesel and all is good. Alpine diesel has additives to prevent wax build up in the system.

You will be fine with the original. I just got back from a 2 week road trip to the snow and had a great time. Just make sure you fill up with Alpine diesel near the fields if you are running a D4 and if you plan on staying overnight above the snow line it's been cold down there.

Meh, if you need it, doesnt matter what it costs. That's why I always try my best to plan my fuel stops though, cooma fill up, and good to get back to cooma from there usually.

I wouldn't have thought that was jaw dropping pricing, where we travel that would be considered bargain basement.

This was from 6 years ago.

                  Cheers Andrew

For a town that has a winter population of atleast 25k, and considering 60km away in Cooma the price is 152c, yes, my jaw hit the floor.

Antifreeze in your wiper bottle is something else to think about if your vehicle is running around in below zero temp.
Don't use the same stuff as the radiator though, get the one specifically for the windscreen.
I'm sure its available in parts stores.
