  • Fuel economy when towing

Having just returned from 13000 Kms towing my Lotus 2.5 Tonne (fully loaded ) van I thought I'd share with you how I went fuel wise .

I tow in S4 ( except when going downhill and I flip over to D for a bit , not that it makes much difference I guess), 2500 RPM, and about 92 showing on the clock but 87 on the GPS.

Best I got was 15 litres per 100, worst 22 ( short trip into a raging headwind), but averaged about 17 per 100.

I had hoped for better, and after my first short trip with the combo returned 15 I budgeted for that for this trip, how wrong I was!!

Clearly by the time I load up the Prado with extra gear, stick the Waeco in and load it up wine and beer, stick the Gennie in the rear, and fill the drawers with dry food it ads considerably to the load and thus the fuel economy.

I should add mine is the Diesel version.

Just thought for anyone considering towing a large van with the Prado that this might be interesting , by the way most 200 owners I talked with were getting between 22-25 per 100, so perhaps I shouldn't be complaining.

    Cheers all

What size tyres do you run Mark? If you run 70 series tyres did you factor in the difference to your calculations?

I have heard similiar. A family friend 'stepped up' to a F250 from an LC, much bigger rig obviously and in the low 20l/100kms where as he used to burn high 20's with the toyota.

I guess there really is no replacement for displacement...

Speed makes a big difference as well. with those figures i'm guessing you where going 100kmh or as close as you could get to it. We towed our off-road 2000kg van 6000km when the Prado had less than 15,000 on the clock and averaged less than 14Lph. Sat on or around 90KMH.

Nope used to sit on 2500 RPM, which gave me about 92-93 on the clock but about 85-87 on my Hema App tracking on the IPad

I think the weight is the issue, we had the van loaded to capacity ( yes put it over a weigh bridge ), but we did have some stuff in the Prado.

Shape of the van also plays a part. Reduce drag and fuel economy will improve.

Yes I see why you are disappointed with the fuel figures then.

Whoa! I was thinking of one of these as a work truck.

Back to square one for that project.

I reckon the BFG's add around 1L/100km in the petrol version over the factory tyres. Wouldn't be too much different in the diesel.

That's pretty good considering your hauling 5.5t+

I tow 2.5t loaded van, never sat on anything in the 90`ies for any length of time, found that 100=102 on the gps was a good speed staying with the trucks. I am getting 18-19 l/100km depending on condition and that is towing in S4
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

                          Hi All,

People often forget the petrol version? Here is a extract from my trip using the Petrol towing close to 2.5 Tonne. The current average is 19.468 over 3600 km. This however does include some driving around town and quite a bit of beach driving.

Suggest these figures are on the high side. My uncle is travelling with me in his 200 series sahara towing 2.8 tonne and presently averaging mid 19's

Thats actually not to bad, especially considering the general assumption that the petrol version will drink like a fish and therefore should not be considered for such duties. I dare say you take it very easy and drive to conserve fuel.
